i googled it:

RECALL ID# 70657 - FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINEELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
Recall Date: August 07, 2009
Model Affected: R1200 GS
Component Affected: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINEELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
Recall Summary: BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006 THROUGH 2008 R1200 GS MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN AUGUST 2006 AND JANUARY 2008. THE SEALING OF THE FUEL PUMP CONTROL UNIT HOUSING MIGHT BE INSUFFICIENT AND WATER COULD INTRUDE INTO THE CONTROL UNIT HOUSING CREATING A HUMID ATMOSPHERE. UNDER SUCH CONDITIONS, THE FUEL PUMP COULD CORRODE AND THEN FAIL.
Consequence: FAILURE OF THE FUEL PUMP WILL CAUSE INADEQUATE FUEL TO REACH THE ENGINE AND CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING. A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER WITHOUT WARNING COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy: BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP CONTROL UNIT FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT OCTOBER 12, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.

There is a lot of information on ADV about this. Haven't heard from my dealer yet.

Oddly enough, I heard about it first through my dealer, but only because we were discussing extended warranties. Mine is up in January and with the issues I've had to date and the whole final drive failure rate being so high, I'm wondering if this is something to consider...

Actually I'm waiting for the latest quote as the Dealer met with the warranty folks last week. Speculation is $500 for 5 years IF I sign up before mine expires in January.

I have never had the problems with a bike like I've had with this one - output shaft & rear main seal failures to name 2. But the past year & 10,000 miles have been flawless and I have too much in it (seat, Ohlins, Aeroflow) to get a decent trade or resell. Besides, I actually like the beast!

aside from a few recalls, the only problem ive had has been the clutch switch... but given the cost od FD's and computers... a hundred bucks a year sounds pretty good.

Received the official notice today (11/13). The fuel pump control unit is to be replaced. For R1200GS/R1200GSA from 2006-2008 (Certain ones).

Came with a sincere apology too !

I'm still carrying a spare.

That sounds like a decent price for five more years of peace of mind. On my GS I had one warranty issue that left me stranded in CA - the gear selector pot. The next big problem started just after the warranty expired and BMW NA told me to pound sand. My odometer went to 999,999 miles and stuck there. They wanted around $1000 for a new kombi and couldn't retrieve my original mileage. Sold the bike to a guy who didn't care. I lose sleep at night over stuff like that.

i went in for the recalled fuel thing, and the serice writer says "your warranty is over in febuary, your output shaft seal is leaking and needs to be warrantied before then, and an extended warranty is $995 for 4 years, 0 deductible"

ugh.

So I just got the GS back from the Dealer (who I like again since they swapped some staff out). They replaced the Fuel Pump Control, checked for any outstanding TSB's and changed & inspected the final drive fluid (I do this once a year now). All is well with the bike.

Since it was pouring the remnants of Hurricane Ida, we then sat and discussed warrantys as mine is up in January. They recently sat with 2 plan offerings: XtraRide & NAC (Indian). We were both shocked at the pricing which is, essentially, $600 per year. The 5 years I referred to included the standard 3 years that came with the bike. It's snake oil to do that, imho.

The rate goes down for multi-years, but not enough to make it enticing. The Dealer has had good dealings with both companies in terms of covering work, but agree that, damn, that is some steep pricing.

So I am passing on the opportunity. If an issue arises, I can always elect to get the service & wait a few months to make a claim...the up side to having multi-bike syndrome.

Had a great ride home in the rain. Seriously. The bike ran well and handled the wet back roads with ease. Every time I get the notion to trade it in on something newer I go ride it and remember why I probably (never say never) never will.

kinda brutal though isn't it? what is the addictive magic these machines have over us? If I had a woman that gave me these kind of issues ........well if she was as nice to ride as these are then....but you get my meaning right?

The XtraRide quote with $25 deductible was as follows:
36 months: BMW
48 months: $599 (essentially one year after BMW runs out)
60 months: $742
72 months: $972

ABS: add $100 to each contract amount

Tire & Wheel package: add $175

Touring Package: add $175

Trailer package: add $175

Woman package: add....

This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are R12RT's experiencing the same issue. I suspect the R12S would also but it does see the weather and water that most Gs/RT's do.

At the time I thought it was a pretty sure thing that it would fail so I got the part. Now, with the recall and all that, I think the cable deal would be enough. Maybe I'll carry a cable too. I sure wasn't sorry I had an antenna when it went wacky. I take an assortment of tools and associated stuff on trips, but it would be OJT if I ever had to take anything really out of the ordinary apart ! Unlike some of our members, I didn't buy them to work on them, but due to the locations of the dealers, its almost impossible not to have a change of attitude about that.
