I'm curious what they insurance company will sell it back to you for - please dont forget to get that figure.

Any thoughts on what will replace the S?

If that deer hadn't been drinking, it may have had a better reaction time to get out of your way.

Glad to hear you're staying with donkeys! Heal up quickly!

bump for some news

I started in on the bike yesterday and it's worse than I thought. The bike is beyond economical repair. So to parts it goes. Check out the parts for sale section. If you need something PM me.

Sorry, to hear it won't be back on the road.

What will the replacement be?

Dono yet, so many choices. maybe r12s or r12r. A local dealership has a new 0 mile 08 Aprilia Tuono for $8900. Tempting

Choices are good...The new Z1000 could be a contender.

If you go Touno...I hope you like to wheelie.
It might be naked, but those bikes were superbikes with a handlebar conversion. My brother-in law had one for 23K miles-- very reliable with amazing sound. I had a 2000.5 Mille R --amazing machine, but just could not get comfortable on it.

Bill, hard to look at these pics of your bike -to much like mine.

So glad to hear your on the mend Bill!

Finally getting back into the swing of things and checking back in here at the Forum. I obviously saw that you had preceded me with your IED[eer] strike while looking for replacement bits for mine. Hitting a smaller 130lb doe left me in better shape and hopefully a rebuildable bike. My skin crawls with empathy as I review your pics. I still can't get the smell of cooking venison and manure out of my head. Continue to heal well and be safe.

Best,
Mark S

Deer are native to North America, and include several different types. The largest of these is the "Mule" deer that inhabit most of the West, that in a fully grown adult buck can be as much as 300 hundred pounds. Most of them are much smaller than that, but most adult males weigh in around 150 to 200 pounds. Their ability to jump fences and other obstacles is amazing...even the smaller Columbia Black tails in our neck of the woods can pretty easily clear an 8 foot fence from a stationary position. And you NEVER know which way these critters are going to jump. On many occasions I've seen them bolt across a road, turn a 180 and go back the other way. Can be pretty freaky...

But they're small compared to elk and moose...and don't even ask me about those Colorado White Faced Buffalo! LOL

Though I think I'd prefer just about any of these to a fully grown 'roo.

Cheers! Bill J

Red face Native, just like the Elk, Moose, & Bison.

Quick as a Roo, but on average a bit more mass, higher center of gravity, and let's not mention the possibility of antlers. I'm was just glad I didn't have a date with one of the Elk I saw herds of, just crossing into Idaho from Nevada on 225 the day after I clipped the doe.

+ 1 on a rough date with a roo.

Any weight mass that is as mobile as a roo or deer is force to be reckoned with. all the more at speed.

I suppose one "advantage" of a 'roo over a mule deer, is the 'roos don't have those damn big antlers. Those racks could easily kill someone, particularly at 60 mph.

We were bird hunting on Kumivah peak near Gerlach back in the 70's, came around a rock outcropping only to find myself face to face with a huge buck. He must have had at least a four foot wide rack. These big ones are known sometime to go into attack mode and I was quite glad he decided to just walk away from the encounter. With a little 16 gauge single shot in my mitts I wasn't entirely sure I could stop him in time if he decided to defend his does.

I really avoid riding within an hour of dawn or dusk in the Sierras or the Cascades. If a deer can kill a guy like Lawrence Grodsky on a bike, I don't stand a snowballs chance.

Glad you survived the deer strike, even if your bike didn't. It could easily have been much worse.

Cheers, Bill J

And those Nevada range cows at o'dark thirty! Nothing gets your attention like a big black cow laying on the road (to get warm) in the middle of the night. NOT fun!

Thanks Bill for explaining, I've learnt something.
Such a beautiful animal but I didn't know they posed such a problem!
And yes one would not want one of there racks to come in contact with you!
Kangaroos are pretty predictable if you see them, its the emus that are unpredictable.

Even smaller animals can be a serious pain. I have to swing between dead opossums hiding in the apex line everywhere since two weeks. Its not as bad as hitting a deer, but it can still provoke a lowside when running over it at speed knee on the asphalt.
