New R1100s Owner, Intro and questions
I just committed to buy a yellow '99 R1100s. The bike comes with the large saddlebags and only has 14,140 miles. It has a Ztechnik exhaust and a "chip". I'm getting the bike delivered in two weeks, and I'm very excited.
I owned a Daytona Orange R90s back in the late 80's early 90's and I love it. I bought it from my brother and when it was time to sell, I had to sell it back to him. Several years later he sold it to someone else (I was living in Brooklyn at the time and didn't have safe storage space). We both kick ourselves to this day for making that mistake. I rode a '03 R1100s at the local dealer that had the Vanderline (sp) exhaust and had been chipped. I'm hoping that I will experience similar performance gains with the Ztechnik. I wanted to know, aside from the 18,000 service, what maintenance should I expect from a bike of this vintage with these low numbers? |

Welcome.
Performance should be very similar. Change oil/filter and set valves every 6K. Change tranny and rear-end every other 6K and maybe bleed brakes. That's about it. Enjoy!

if the bike has been still for a while, change all fluid regardless of the milage, and without waiting the 18k miles. If the seller cannot provide proofs of recent service, I'd do it anyway, claimed to be recent or not. Especially true for brake fluid that turns bad very quickly and can kill you.

perhaps some fresh tires as well.

thanks guys
thanks for the input. it has a set of Michelin tires with less than 1k. The guys is the second owner and thought he would do more touring. he decided it's not what he does and is selling it. he already has a Ducati and a Triumph in his arsenal. He wanted $4700 w/BMW saddlebags (no city lids). It was borderline too high, but since he was willing to split shipping with me I took him up on it.
Yellow....not my first choice but what the heck. Dare to be different right. And anything is better than my old (but much beloved) '77 CB750F. |

Wow, '77 CB750F-the black one with the redish-brown stripe?
That is an oldie-how many miles on that/

Well welcome aboard. This is slowly becoming a legendary bike. I've had two of them over the years and sold them for reasons that had nothing to do with the bikes themselves. I just seem to want something different at times. So the recommendations you've received will serve you well. It really doesn't take much until you get into the 50,000 mile territory and then you need to look at bearings in the rear. (Do a search here.....lots of discussion.)
The engine will run forever. Search the "check your oil" threads here also. You can under or over fill it if you don't do it right. Nothing catastrophic, but worth the time and knowledge if you are as anal as some of us. Happy reading. We all have opinions.

Welcome to the forum! Post some pics of it here if you have any. Make sure you know how to check the oil level properly.

You got a good deal, amigo. Nice work. Start looking around for a GS torque arm. It will make the bike steer much quicker.

Used as hot setup on earlier R11 s models to slightly shorten wheelbase to quicken steering or replace your bashed up on on your GS. I'm just going to ride it this fall and see if I want to make any changes. I imagine after a few thousand miles I might notice some areas for improvement.
Right now I'm just completely goo-goo over the idea of having modern suspension, engine and braking! Not to mention the 173% HP and the 146% Torque over the CB750F! Last edited by hellfishtat; 08-27-2010 at 07:57 AM.. |
