Hello & question from a newbe

Hi all - I just joined to try to gather information on a planned purchase of a 2007 R12S - I'm going to test ride this weekend. Bike has about 7500 miles and looks to be in very good condition (pictures only). It has ABS and Ohlins.

Any advice on what I should look for on the bike - any trouble areas?
What would be considered a fair price (listed at about $10K)?

I've always lusted after an R11S or R12S - hope that I can finally own one.

Thanks

There isn't much that needed to be done for maintenance in 7500 miles.
I'd just ask for any oil change receipts/records.
The run in service at 600 miles should have included the final drive fluid be changed-I'd ask about that also.

Oh, I hope they did not break it when they were servicing it. My name José Jiménez.

Welcome to the crazy place.

What a pointless thing to say, but then that's something of a specialty with you, isn't it?

+1. That's really about it. Unless the bike has been uncommonly abused in some way, you can't go wrong. $10k is about right. I wouldn't take that for mine. You might also look at it as a candidate for long term ownership. There weren't that many of them made so they may reach collector status at some point. Not in my lifetime though, so I hope my grandboys recognize it for what it is.

If it's still under warranty, maybe have a dealer inspect it. It came with a 3/36 warranty, so find out the in-service date. The idle stepper motors sometimes go bad. If it has a nice smooth idle, I wouldn't worry about it. How long has it been since the last oil change? If it's been a year, I'd get that done.

Fortunately for you the decision tree on buying an r1200s is simpler than the r1100s.

Pick color you like. Only three to choose.
Pick year. lets see...
Look for Ohlins... Or, not.
Assess any accessories that may come with the bike. But there aren't many. You may find hard bags, but they are few and far between.

Then look at mileage, maintenance records, etc...

Cash or credit.

Ride it.

Simple.

I wouldn't take $10K for mine.

If it has ever been serviced at a dealer, the records will be in the BMW data base available at any BMW dealership, that will include the origional PDI, 600 mile service and any unfulfilled recalls.

My new one had nothing in the Data base so I had San Jose BMW do both the 600 miler plus a major service even though it had 2100 miles.

Love the bike.

Four, actually... Yellow/gray, Aluminum White, Fast Black and the funny Clown Color (the bestest, btw.).

Plus, there are a few custom painted bikes that pop up for sale here and there... darn, now things are getting more complicated!

Okay, I know I'm younger than some of you, but, did you guys SERIOUSLY not get the humor in that line? Please don't tell me that I (not including Bubba) am the ONLY one who knows of José Jiménez!? I wasn't even born back then!

You guys need to take a chill pill once in a while.

Well' unfortunately the Ignore function does work on quotes by other posters. I have come to the conclusion that engineers and some Germans are deficient in the "sense of humor" attribute, Mr. K. I happened to watch the movie "The Right Stuff" last evening and actor Scott Glenn's rendition of Bill Dana's José Jiménez act came to mind this morning. But, Ralf and Craig go personal at the drop of a hat. This is a crazy place.

Really no trouble areas and with only 7500 miles as long as it has been changed a couple times that should be good.

Given the bike is 3 years old you might want change all the fluids just so you have a good starting point, and know it was done. I agree with the others, at that low of mileage unless it has been stored outside or abused I doubt if anything is wrong with it. Here is a link to the service schedules if you are into doing that stuff yourself.

A&S BMW Motorcycles ::: BMW Motorcycle Service and Maintenance Schedules

Welcome to the board and I hope all works out good, the R1200S is a great bike.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
The bike is at a local dealer and was sold and serviced by them - so I'll ask for the records. The previous owner had the last service about 1000 miles ago and then traded it in on a K1300.

Test riding this weekend . It's going to be a change from my current bike of 6 years (Triumph Thruxton).

Sounds like you are going to get a bike previously owned by a BMW enthusiast. Good find.
