No MC Content but not OT/Board Etiquette

A recent but short-lived thread about inappropriate (i.e. innumerate) posting on every topic got me thinking about posting etiquette and what standards, if any, ought we as a group follow. Over the years there have been some pretty tart exchanges, but mostly the kind of stuff goes away as quickly as it starts. So I'm asking you the members, what if any standards of conduct should there be? For example, is it always OK to hijack a thread? Goodness knows after about 4-5 on-topic relies threads run off into a ditch or take off in another direction. What about personal attacks. Plenty of those; I've done it myself; & sometimes it felt pretty good. There is plenty more, but I hope that others will take this topic up. OK, I brought this subject up so here's my list of what I CAN"T STAND TO SEE POSTED HERE...Religion & Politics, in either order. OK your turn!

Going OT is inevitable with this group. I think it's cause some of these guys ride dual sport bikes and tend to ride their motorcycles where... gasp... there is no pavement. So I've heard (can't confirm).

Also, I'm not a 'fan' of personal attacks. If you can't argue something based on merits turning it into a personal attack reduces you to a kid on a playground... and as such, those schoolyard antics prove you have no more intelligence than a 5 year old.

Threads that go off topic are double edged swords. Obviously it can be entertaining and/or appalling, and only the viewer will know which is which.

Personally I disagree with hard and firm rules. Banter that one might expect to hear around a table at the bar is fine; the give and take makes for thought and laughter. The limit is when the words turn angry and personal; Recent postings have attacked a previous ones merely because an on-topic comment wasn't apparently within the viewpoint of the attacker, or the attacker just dislikes the guy that posted it. Sheesh! Get a life...

I'm glad to see you bring up this subject GR and your candid admittance of making personal attacks was more transparent than I expected to read. Hats off to you.

Having been the recipient of one of your "personal" attacks (Religious content in my post IIRC) I must say it was not a pleasant experience by any means but on the other hand I bear no hard feeling towards you (or any other Pelican for that matter).

Several months have passed since then and your behavior towards me has been very Gentlemanly. Again Hats off to you.

I can only comment that when one proposes a specific standard there can be much debate about what is and isn't good or bad and I would dare say not everyone would be happy with any given standard. This is thusly a difficult to reconcile subject IMO.

As it is I'm fine with Roger Albert and the way he "keeps us in line" on this forum.

And so at the risk of a "personal" attack please allow me leave you with this for a Standard: Matthew 12:7 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

And in the spirit of transparency let me say I don't always exhibit this towards everyone like I should.

Here is one, no whining to Wayne, the board owner. I don't know the man, never dealt with him, but I am sure he has more to worry about than any petty problems a board member might have about someone not being nice to them. Keep it in the family, whatever needs deleted Roger can take care of.

I wish Wayne sold stuff I could use, I would buy oil and air filters from him, just because this forum is so entertaining.

Here you go: Netiquette. Read the core rules, and I am sure it covers pretty much all think of.

Not claiming I follow this all the time.

get stuffed!

taking up band width is silly though I must say...

We could have a list (a sticky) of some things for sure - and I have been a biatch before too, sorry 'bout that, it's when I go off the meds or sometimes if I have too many

banter is good though, in some cultures maybe a bit too different - it's tough I spose

I know sometimes when I write stuff that only an ozzie will know what I mean, I guess that's a bad habit, talking in code...I'm waffling, damn it! ooh I mean sod it, bugger it - um...yeah OK bye

Keep it up Jon!

That is part of what makes these international communities so great. We all share a common interest, but have different views on most things based on our culture (or lack of sometimes) religion, how much we are brain washed by our various governments, etc. Nothing would make this place stale faster than a bunch of to the point focused conversations about R1100S/R1200S/HP2 Sport bikes.

So yeah, we should probably not hose other people's threads, and we should treat people the way we like to be treated. But if you wear you feelings on your sleeve, well hell I don't know where you should work, or hang out because most places I have been are full of professional smart asses that like to needle folks, that is just the way it is. Don't be a grizzle guts.

Now I am going back to the K bike forum for some quiet time.

SergioK, I'm with you on personal attacks. It really is poor form as far as I'm concerned.

Now, a good debate on merit, technical content (this is supposed to be a technical forum), difference of opinion, different stance, etc, etc. That's all good! If you don't like someone or they bug you for some reason - the best attack is to ignore them and their thread will wither and die...

On the subject of OT's - well, it seems there are more and more creeping in. I'm a late comer to this board and I still enjoy the technical banter. Some of you guys are technically amazing with your contributions. A good example is Scott's detailed contribution for the A arm modification. He included detailed AutoCad drawings, thought out and well explained information. Hat's off to you, Scott. Then, Stephen from Australia followed up with detailed photos of how he attacked the mod - great stuff.

Remember what yo mama taught you - if you don't have anything good to say then say nothing at all!!

1. Stop the over use of full quote feature. The same photo four times on a page is not necessary. Maybe a simple reference to the photo in post # xx will suffice. Not everyone has your 100 gazzillion bites per nanosecond server.

2. If you don't like someone use the "ignore" feature. This will keep you from flaming.

3. Try not to become a "pack flamer." Pack flaming will crash a thread faster than anything I've seen here.

4. Don't send PM's to tell someone what you think about them. They really don't give a chit what you think.

5. Keep in mind that "no one" is as smart as you. So, cut the idiots so slack.

6. What sounds dumb to you may not be dumb to all who read.

7. Take your friggin' meds 1 hour before posting if you have a temper problem.

8. Finally, you engineers (who lack a normal sense of humor) show a little mercy to the rest of us poor dumb bast@rds.

9. There is no "seniority system" in the rules that you agreed to in order to post here. Deal with it if you think you are the "keeper of the Holy Grail of the Pelican."

10. Live and LET LIVE.

Must.....resist.....

And engineers have a normal sense of humor. It's the rest that are twisted.

I'm with chewie on this one...top to bottom. Of course I don't know what he said....Aussie talk and all, but it sounds good and it got me laughing first thing in the morning so that's gotta be a good thing.

As far as my own opinion on things....I have one....but I forgot what it was while I was typing the above.

Maybe it'll come back....

hope not.

I think we should not talk politics. Some people here try to make bold, off topic and unfounded political assertions in every post they make. They have their beliefs, that's good, but they should not try to stick them through our throats by force. I for one will never fire first on that, but I have difficulties to not respond if somebody starts it. (obligatory reference: xkcd: Duty Calls ). Please don't suck me into this, it's like proposing a rail of coke to a rehab!

And just to illustrate: Matthew 12:7 Rousseau, Plato and pretty much anybody with a brain agrees on that one, don't have your religion claim common sense

You guys ought to go check out the off-topic PARF forum here. I've never seen anything on the BMW forums like we have over there on a daily basis. Wayne doesn't read this forum. I've asked him. I've also asked him about his selling bike parts here and he said no dice.
