Is this the Laser DB killer?

Howdy,

Put my new-to-me Laser BC-1 mufflers on today, (sans chip for the moment) and I am wishing it were just a little quieter and mellower. Can you guys tell me from this photo, is the db killer installed in these?

Thanks 2x Tony. So the rounded collar is it. In your pic I see a small hole lower, that is apparently where a weld is drilled out to remove them?

How would you contrast the sound volume and quality with and without the DB killers?

No, No, NO! The sound of the Laser is intoxicating. It & the Staintune have the best aural notes going on an R1100S.
If you want a stranglulated farting sound go back to the stocker. You will probably want to chip it. Call Foster.

Have the chip, and Bob is going to exchange or reflash it for me, as is is for a 2003 twin-spark bike and mine is an 01 (6/2000). So it's on hand, but not in yet.

Actually, while there is a bit of a difference with the db killers in or out, I don't remember it being huge difference. The big difference came with the installation of the laser intermediate pipe. I think they call it the sport cat eliminator or sport cat collector.

All this time and I never knew the DB reducers were there. I already did the Y pipe and am happy with the sound. Running a Dobeck FI module. Looking at the DB reducer design I cant say it is very optimum for performance. The insert has to cause a reverse pressure pulse. If they had made it more of a cone with wings holding it in place it would have reduced the noise some and even helped the flow. I may remove them just to eliminate the reverse pulse. These are not 2 stroke engines. Must not be to bad for performance or surely the Germans would have come up with a better design. But a free Hp or two cant hurt either. Undecided.

I have the BC-1 mufflers, cat eliminator, and chip on my '00. I recall there being some belief that the DB reducers fattened up the midrange a bit, possibly at the expense of top end power. Mine are in because it's just too GD loud without them. Other than the volume, though, it arguably sounds better with them out. You don't get the whiffly-backrap-strangulated-farting noise when they're pulled.

It's been a while but what I think I heard Foster say was that the db killers don't significantly affect performance. The smaller diameter part of the db killer is about 3 inches long and the length of that portion can be made longer or shorter to change the tone/pitch of the pipes.

I've got the Lasers w/cat eliminator and Db killers. When I got it from Foster, he asked me to try it as is. If not satisfied, then I could drill out the weld and experiment with chopping off, as I recall, 3/4 of an inch of the Db killer at a time, using stainless steel screws to hold them in. That would make it possible to moderate sound/Db, apparently. I never went through the trouble. Shine a flashlight into the exhaust in a dark garage to see them.

OTOH, if you think it's too loud now, you won't want to remove them!

It's borderline for me with them in. And it's not so much that I don't like the sound, it's just a little louder than I wish it were for my rural/suburban riding haunts. Stealth is more my bag.

Imma ride it for a while and see if I acclimate.

BRILLIANT!

I'll just ride my normal route with one of those giant Lab Safety 1000-packs and drop a set or two in each mailbox.

Thank you Phil!

It's when you don't wear earplugs, that the Laser becomes quieter with time.

LOL, I am already 'there'. Much hearing loss already, like many of you.
