Ignition switch wires

I've got a loose wire leading into the base of the ignition switch.

I'd prefer NOT to have to remove the whole assembly. Really, really, really DON'T want to. Seriously.

I cannot find any part on the microfiches I have access to, so before I start wrenching on things and find out I can't easily procure replacements, does anyone know if the wires can simply be detached from the base? Logically, I'm guessing that they can't. But, if I didn't mention it, I really don't want to take the whole thing apart.

I'm open for thoughts, suggestions, etc.

Thanks, all. And happy Labor Day!

Doug

OK, mission accomplished... sort of.

Did some searching on the interwebs and was able to successfully drop the switch ousing out without complete disassembly.

Discoverd that the the hot lead (red wire, dead center) was completely broken off the tab. God I love it when there's absolutely NO mystery about what the ultimate problem was.

BUT, now I've got another issue... I inadvertantly took the switch apart from top to bottom, instead of just taking the bottom apart FIRST to access the wires. When I took the top off, there were 3 pieces (that looked like they came out of a watch) loosely rattling around.

Does anyone have any guidance for reassembly of this portion? Or would I be better off buying the whole unit?

Thanks all!

I've done this, and have photos of the assembly. If the links don't help you let me know and I'll dig them up.

Thanks, guys. Got it all back together, including teeny-tiny springs, and the three contact pieces... slid it back into the housing, held my breath, turned the key and VIOLA!

We're back in business. Appreciate the help.

Sometimes it's necessary to disassemble the switch and clean those contacts. I've had to do that on a 650 and also (I think) on some sort of boxer. The grease gets hard and keeps the contacts from touching.

Agreed, Anton... it was in need of a good cleaning when I got it open.

Amazing how the failure of a single wire connection can result in instant ownership of a 500 pound paperweight.

And unless you've got a standard eyeglass screwdriver tucked into your 'fix-it-all' toolkit to remove the tiny set screw, well... you're screwed.

I lost one of those springs on my garage floor for a few tense hours. I used my home made magnet sweeper to find it.
