I Need Quick Disconnects on My R1100S Transmission!
As some of you may know, I just got finished replacing the clutch assembly in my '99 R1100S due to a clutch slave leaking which of course ruined the clutch disk before I had any evidence of its failure. Well, I installed a weep hole in the transmission to give me warning should that ever happen again. I got the warning sooner than I figured and it wasn't the clutch slave this time. It's the input shaft seal on the transmission itself which bits the big one. The weep hole will probably save the clutch disk this time; however, I don't look forward to splitting the bike in half again so soon after having done it. Maybe it's time to get that GS I looked at on the showroom floor yesterday.

Bubba,
Sorry to hear that, after reading everything you went through with your clutch replacement I decided to take my GSA to Nathan at Boxerworks Service. I told him to replace all the seals he could get to once the pig is split in half, rear main seal, input trans seal and clutch slave seal and of course a new clutch. In doing the research on this job I felt it would just be easier get someone who's done it a number of times, knows all the tricks and backs up their work, because I know I would have screwed it up. I am with Bill here... while you have it split, you may as well do all the other seals... it'll come sooner or later anyway and your bike already has reasonably high mileage.

The tranny only had 20k miles on it since Moybin rebuilt it. I'll pull the starter tomorrow and see how the leak looks inside.
How'd you miss it, Rob? I Thought The R1100S Had a Dry Clutch Last edited by Guest24; 10-02-2011 at 06:08 PM.. |

I did not replace the seal (2) in the clutch slave area. Could this be why I'm seeing Tranny fluid leaking out the weep hole? If this is the case can I replace this seal without pulling the transmission?

I don't know whether they have that stuff in your area as well, but the local Costco Warehouses have Inspection Cameras for sale right now... 3 feet bendable extension with a handle and screen... camera and light seem to do the job well, even in the dark. $149... seems to be well worth it to me.

If I could talk like Judd Hirsch... Alex Reiger from the old sitcom Taxi.
Soaking the rear tire is better than soaking the clutch?

I assume that the Dot 4 brake fluid from the leaking slave trashed the seal. I missed that one.
This is what it looked like when I removed the clutch slave. ![]() Last edited by Guest24; 10-03-2011 at 06:49 AM.. |

Maybe your original problem was the seal and not the slave.

I know the slave was bad, Rick. But, it does appear to be a double fault brought on by the effect of the Dot4 on the seal's neoprene seal. That's just a guess, however. I'm hoping Anton will weigh in on the subject.

Nail-
At this point I have replaced all the trans seals, the rear main and both seals on the FD. If I go in anywhere again I will replace any seals there too.

In the future, I'll more likely than not, do the same, Rick.
![]() Fantastic! ATL BMW has the seal in stock and it's on the way. I'll be up and running by Thursday. Last edited by Guest24; 10-04-2011 at 05:15 AM.. |

I got up this morning and rigged up a stand so that I could start on the rear transmission seal replacement project.
![]() That's the seal around the input shaft where the clutch slave is mounted. ![]() After erecting a make-shift stand that would allow me to remove the rear wheel and bottom bolt on the rear shock, I proceeded with the removal and tied the rear shock up out of the work area. ![]() I had assumed that it would not be necessary to remove the Y-pipe on the exhaust and the assumption was correct. With the wheel removed and the shock out of my way the obstacle was he 1/2" support bar on the rear main frame. ![]() I was able to work around it, however. I proceeded with removing the clutch slave and was able to move it off to the left to gain clear access to the seal itself. ![]() The weep hole definitely saved another clutch replacement. ![]() There was still considerable Red Line lube in the clutch slave cavity. ![]() I cleaned out the cavity and attempted to remove the seal using the screw in the seal pry out method. This didn't work due to the smallness of the seal itself. I used an inspect pick to move the seal. I found that the Dot4 had done its damage to seal material making it quite pliable. Using the pick and a long 1/4" blade screwdriver, I was able to remove the old seal with damaging the metal on the shaft or the transmission housing. ![]() I determined that a 13/16" socket would be the correct tool for pressing the new seal in place. After lubing the lip of the seal that contacts the drive shaft, I got the inner diameter lip onto the drive shaft and then used the socket to press the seal in place. ![]() From that point on it was simply a reversal of the components that I had removed. I did a 20 mile test ride and there doesn't appear to be any leak at this time. ![]() Last edited by Guest24; 10-09-2011 at 08:13 PM.. |
