OT - Need computer help

I just installed a new edition of Kaspersky anti-virus and now when I try to click a link, the computer won't do it, but says: "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." Well I don't have a "system administrator"! I am using Internet Explorer. Help please from one of you computer knowledge-ables.

you didn't say what flavor & version of OS you are using, but assuming it's something like Windoze XP, go the the Control Panel & select User Accounts. Make sure that you are logged on as an Administrator or if you created a logon ID then click on the Properties and make sure that your ID has full powers. It may take a reboot to effect changes. Good luck.

you'd need to disable safe site guard I'd say. Else (I dont use KIS) I'd recommend reinstalling it

bob~

regardless of how you do it, make sure that puppy is completely disconnected from the interweb before you click any anti-virus, anti-bad-guy stuff on or off.
it only takes a second for some loser to hose your system.

you'd be amazed how many computers get hacked in that time period between a clean new install and the on-line updates (which is just before most folks install anti-virus software).

don't ask me how i know.

Thanks guys. I've done all but uninstall to include this: You receive an error message when you click a hyperlink in Outlook
All to no avail. It's not that big a deal, but I was hoping for a quick fix. I'm sure as I noodle around I'll find it.
Craig, I have Explorer 9.

Start, Control Panel, Internet Options, Programs tab, Make Default. You may also want to change other default programs (Internet Programs, Set Programs).

Hi Bob I run this on my computer its a WIN 7 version,
but also I used them on my old WIN XP they all worked great.

Download firefox and run that as your web browser,Freebie.( disable the IE 9)
Download AVAST its free for your virus protection,
Download adblockerplus for firefox, freebie. ( no more pop ups or ads)
these should make your computer work well.

Dude!

Firefox fixed it. Thanks MrMerlin!
Seems like my computer is faster now too. Firefox is now my default browser so should I uninstall Internet Explorer?

Cool glad your running..
for the IE program you could just right click on your desktop and remove the IE link..this wont remove the program though.

Caveat you may find that some older programs may need IE to run .
That is training course materials and such as they as written for IE.

So if FF works then just leave the IE to sit dormant.

Use the AVAST anti virus and ADblocker plus for FF as well,
it makes for a safer and faster internet
The Kaspersky may not work as well as AVAST

+ 1 for firefox.

I use it on all my computers, work, my desktop I built, macbook, win7 partitioned macbook.

I have them all synced so all the bookmarks and settings are the same and update every time i open firefox.

Personally, I don't use any anti-virus, I probably should though. I just don't like how much a heavy program they are and all the extra crap they come with. I will look into AVAST. I am careful on what websites I go to, but I know that won't stop something from happening.

IE absolutely drives me nuts!!!

OK. I didn't/won't. I'm not one to keep anything around I don't use, but I can imagine IE has infiltrated the core of this machine to the point that it would be like trying to unscramble an egg. So, I'll leave it in here just to be safe.

Anyway...problem solved and thanks to all who took the time to help. Now back to my meager computing.

Brief highjack since Bob's solved his woas, Is their a routine that turns on the chip cooling fan? When I swap out the two hard drives I have for a Toshiba NB205, the fan doesn't work with the HD that uses Vista as the OS.

I'd guess that would be in advanced BIOS settings... model/ version/screen shots would be good as for step by step how to.
Matter of IO devices being disabled? perhaps. Anyhow simple solution would be F2 or Del- finding default settings- apply- OK exit- reboot
Besides, really unusual problem! (unnecessary in all), I'd highly recommend getting Win 7 SP1 untouched... install... insert key later etc... get Daz Loader read-run and forget second most hated M$ product ever existed..

There are free shareware programs available that allow you to monitor, adjust/set internal temperature ranges and fan settings, at least for more advanced computers. At a minimum they will tell you what is in that little laptop.

Do some internet research and try one.
On the other hand, it probably doesn't even matter. Little computer is probably just fine.

I don't run Antivirus software... but I make sure to update and run these periodically...

Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download

In the event of an 'event', I download this from a clean PC onto a thumbdrive: VIPRE Rescue - VIPRE Computer Recovery Solution from Sunbelt Software

If I still suspect there may be malicious code on my PC, I'll grab Spybot too... The home of Spybot-S&D!

Without AV- nonsense!- simple flash bombs will have you in no time...

I've found the free version of Malwarebytes to work well - but the free version has functionality.
