Is it possible to not void warranty with TPS adjust?
I'm wondering if anyone knows if a TPS adjustment is made by the dealer, will it void the warranty? I have the typical slight surging issues and my 'S' ALWAYS pops on decel, sometimes more than other times.
I really want to do the adjust and have the skill and tools to do so, but my bike is less than a month old and I have the original 36,000 mile / 3 yr warranty PLUS an additional 3 year warranty. How can I do this without jeopardizing my warranty? Thanks. |

First, if the dealer makes the adjustment I don't think you'd have a thing to worry about - they're doing the adjustment, not you, so if a problem occurs, its their problem.
Second, while I think BMW wants to discourage willy-nilly fiddling with the TPS, it is certainly something that dealers do adjust if they think it is out of adjustment. I'd approach it as telling the dealer of the symptom and let them figure out what is wrong - a stock bike shouldn't be popping on decel. The TPS should be on their list among other things. Third, mild surging is pretty much always there with the R twins. Some bikes do it more than others and some people are bugged a lot more than others. If you're surging is slight, I'd not worry about it - you'll save yourself a lot of stomach acid by not chasing the holy grail of a completely non-surging R twin. Final note: Dealers can't "void a warranty" - but they can claim that a modification you made cause the failure and deny warranty coverage for that failure and that failure alone. Most dealers are pretty good about giving customers the benefit of the doubt - they won't debug a FI problem for you after you've chipped, replaced intakes, and redid the exhaust, but they're usually fine with warranty work on unreleated systems. If you know what you're doing - fiddle away - you're very unlikely to cause a major problem with your warranty. - Mark |

for some reason many of you seem to think your dealers are just arseholes. from what gets said, this carries some justification. pity. i can't see any reason for knocking back warranty for reasons like this. often the problems starts, in my opinion, when the customer walks in the door screaming.
remember, the service department didn't design it, build it or make you buy it. give them the benefit of the doubt and treat them nice. it always helps. and if you adjust something and it doesn't work, tell them the truth and they should help you without an issue. being lied to over warranty really pisses me off. we have owners who think they need to refit std pipes to get ducati warranty. i couldn't give a rat's arse. if it's got a problem, it's got a problem. we've done gearboxes that have obviously been flatshifted all their life, but the owner will try and have you beleive its just been pushed around the lounge room for 3,000 km. still done it for free. i don't care what you've been doing to it, just tell me. of course, if they are dickheads, you'd better go elsewhere. brad rambling - that kind of night. |

My dealer has always been great about adjustments on the throttle settings etc... Even more so after they installed my Vanderlinde and chip.
Its been much better after that, as far as popping on deceleration.

Just find some of that flat blue epoxy paint and do your own seal on the TPS screws...

I wouldn't sweat it....the paint is a joke anyway. My dealer too has adjusted the TPS and the paint removed from the screws did not affect my warranty. Besides "Some one" could have "Power washed your bike and sprayed the TPS" Right? ;-)
But when you read the manual (RTFM)...it clearly states "Do Not Powerwash your "S"!" Tomas

Brad, I am sure that you could tell many a funny story over an ale or three about "customers" trying to put one over the service department or having outrageous and unrealistic demands.
The same would be for any good dealership the world over. This could be another thread starter. Cheers TREVOR
