Akrapovic Exhaust Question
I purchased my R1200S used and it came with the titanium Akrapovic rear silencer already installed. The previous owner claimed to have purchased it used from a track bike that had been involved in a crash and he showed me the scratches and chip on the carbon fiber tail cone. The exhaust sounds great and is not loud for my taste even without db killers. I remember the laser system 1 exhaust on my R1100S being much louder.
So the question I have is how long till most people repack their exhausts? I have a replacement tail cone which I would like to install and I am wondering if I should just repack now if I decide to swap tail cones. It will be a complete waste of a repacking kit if the sound level does not change. Does anyone have experience to share with respect to the life expectancy of exhaust packing with normal use? I have put approximately 6K of the 16K miles on my bike and have not noticed any difference in sound level. Thanks for any wisdom you may have to share.

I had mine on the bike without baffles, seeing how I never got them.
It was throaty under normal riding conditions and loud when wrung out... I don't think that it will change much with a re-pack, because my bike had 800 miles on it when I purchased it... and the exhaust never changed it's note until I sold it... and you'd have to ask John if it has now, he is at over 36K miles now, I think. Actually, I don't think I have ever re-packed an exhaust, period.

I had a supertrapp on my R100GS for 40,000 miles before I sold it. I repacked it at around 30,000 with a slight change in sound at idle, slightly muted, less bark under acceleration. It was a 20 min job with anti-seize paste. The supertrapp style muffler is pretty dependent on it's packing though. Can't speak to the Akropovic.

in most cases (i said most), repacking the silencers does two things:
makes it quieter makes it run stronger i know, i know, everybody seems to think it slows down a bike when they repack the silencers because it gets quieter and we've all been brainwashed to think louder is faster. i've seen it on the dyno more than once and the bikes really do perform better. sure, it's a tiny, little, spec of more go-power, but it's there. it's just impossible to convince people that to go faster, you can go quieter. most of all, it does quiet down the loud a little bit, and that can be worth something, especially if you have a cranky neighbor with a shotgun loaded with rock salt (been there, it's painful). re-packing does make a big difference for a two-stroke dirt bike. like...really significant. that's one of the reasons i adopted a staintune exhaust.....no repacking necessary.

Well, if there is a slight chance of more power that is incentive enough to repack.
I have an Akrapovic repack kit which I purchased with the new tail cone. When I asked how many miles the packing typically lasts the sales rep simple said do it when it gets loud. Hence the question with respect to has anyone's exhaust increased in volume significantly. Thanks - Kurt
