George, it is great watching someone that apparently knows what he is doing so well in what looks like a fine job on this rebuild.

I am always amazed that something with so many parts can spin thousands of times per minute without exploding. And humbled by those that can make it do so.

Dean, thanks for the kind words. I really enjoy engine work, I wish I could do it more often. Right now I have a 2013 528i with bent rods due to a hydrolock. Insurance is paying this bill and they would rather I put rods in it than replace the complete engine ($$$). It's a new 4 cylinder turbo so I'm quite excited to crack into it.... Just waiting on parts from Germany.

Tom, don't forget this one was on the verge of exploding hahaha, but I know what you mean. It's always nerve wracking the first time you spin it to redline after a build.

Really clean work, great thread. I swapped an S52 into an E30 a few years ago. What a blast that car was when it was finished. I love American V8s but a BMW 6 exhaling thru a good exhaust system sings such a sweet song.

We have an E28 that I've been thinking of swapping in a poor man's S50/52 and we have a S54 drivetrain that might find its way into an E30 or E34 wagon. A BMW 6 just has such a great feel when its spun up in rpm.

Fantastic thread! Thank you for taking us along. I never thought that it'd be easier to dump the entire front subframe/suspension with the engine. Interesting.
I agree, but year and years ago I had an E36 with an M44. A lively enough engine to say the least. After I went to an E46 there was no doubt then six was just that much more exciting. Now, back to an i4 (N20) it's like the best of both worlds. It reminds me very much of my old 318i but with the power perks of a six. They did a fantastic job on this engine.

Sergio, I never thought I'd hear someone say a m44 was a lively engine but then again I've only.driven them around the block. The N20 is an awesome engine... I'm awaiting someone to crack the DME so I can put it in an E30 or E28. Most of the time for me I will drop everything out the bottom. If I was pulling the engine and then putting the car outside for an extended period of time I sometimes just take them out the top. It all just depends.
You might like this.... It's hard to see but the closest car has the subframe to get the head off (its a N55). The far car has the.subframe out to replace the engine (hydrolocked N52). ![]() Lane, the N20 hydrolocked due to driving into high water.

George, after driving a car with 100hp, 140hp feels lively.

George, wow what a beauty. I have always said that an engine rebuilt by a top notch Tech as you clearly are is vastly superior to something off the assembly line put together by assemblers, if that is a word.
I could not find one small detail..............The asking price. ![]()

Dean, thanks for the kind words. The interesting part of BMW 'M' engines prior to these latest turbo versions are they are all hand built. As for the price... $25.5, its idown towards the end.
