1100S transmission / gearbox noises

Hi,

I'm having some noises I'm not sure to worry about or not...

Clonking noise in neutral at low revs (>1000 rpm). Have heard this is common and normal though.

Sometimes a noise when starting, almost like breaking a stick of wood against your knee, “snapping” perhaps is an adequate description

Occasionally some clicking, rattling noises when accelerating hard from low revs (around 3-4000 rpm)

Besides this no issues with the gears, no false neutrals, no gears jumping out or similar.

Bike is a -99, has 16k miles, and no clutch spline wear.

What do you make out of this...?

Check your throttle bodies. This might be where your rattling noise is coming from.

The noise on startup is (probably) chain slap. You can get an upgraded cam chain tensioner com the dealer or elsewhere that will eliminate the noise and reduce the chances of breaking the chain guides.

Throttle bodies were synced recently when it had its service done.

Regarding the bearings how do you check them, is it normal for them to wear out at 15k miles and what are the general symptoms...?

The startup noise I've heard only 5 times or so during the last week, never before - again may I ask why this is happening and would there be any other symptoms...?

Thanks a lot Vic

The early cam chain tensioners were not adaquately designed to hold hydraulic pressure to keep tension on the guide rail. This results in occasional noise from the left side at startup, which could possibly cause extra damage if left unchecked. They were upgraded, and the upgraded part works.
About $100 from any dealer. I got mine from rubber chicken.

There is more information online about this than you could possibly ever want to know.

I like to keep my idle a little higher, 1200-1300 rpm. You can adjust it using the big brass screws that face backward on the throttle bodies. Try a quarter turn to the left with each screw. If you like it, turn it another quarter. If not, turn it back.
