R 1200 S variable throttle

Hi All,

I read with interest all the past discussions about the non linear throttle on the 1200 S. In other words, the first x degrees of throttle do very little because there is a cam mechanism on the throttle body designed to make the throttle conservatively non-linear. I guess to keep unsuspecting old geezers out of trouble? Personally I am a suspecting old geezer so I thought I'd take a look at what it would take to over come this built in mechanical disadvantage to a snap off the line.

It has been documented that you can remove the roller between the cam and the throttle body lever which has the effect of moving the throttle half way along the conservative length of the cam ramp thus making actuation more aggressive.

I didn't care for removing the roller because of friction / wear concerns so I star tend looking for a different way to "bypass" the conservative profile of the throttle cam.

I found that if I unbolted the throttle cam from the throttle body and moved it about 10 mm back I could get the roller to engage the cam all the way past the flat part of the cam.

Tonight I fabricated a PROTOTYPE bracket so please be kind, it's just a model. But I think can make it work. Will check back in once I've finalized and rested the design but I thought you might like to see the direction I'm taking..

Ok.....that took me a bit to figure out what you did there.
I think it would have been a little easier to figure out if there was a before/after shot on the same side throttle body.

Do you have something planned now for the throttle stop as it does not seem to line up anymore??

Or have I missed something once again?

Cheers

R1200 S throttle

Here's another photo. Throttle stop unresolved, more importantly WOT stop no longer functions and throttle advances 20% beyond full throttle. Need to machine some king of sleeve to go over throttle sop.

Curious to hear how you like your mod. BMW did all of this to keep the bike from being snatchy without a lot of electronics.

No feed back yet. This is very early stage hence how crude it looks. One of my criteria is not modifying the stock hardware in a way that is irreversible in case I hate it..

Pirate, I'm running the same set up right now. You take the roller off the throttle pin, which gets you about half way along the flat spot on the throttle actuating cam - so about half the distance I wanted to get with my bracket.. I thought I'd evaluate this set up before going further with my bracket idea. Initial impression after a 30 mile ride is that it definitely makes the throttle quicker although the twist grip feel is a little graunchy. I lubed the pin with moly lubricant but it definitely seems to have more friction. I might just short circuit this whole experiment and spring for a pair of HP2 throttle bodies. They are identical as far as I can tell except they don't have the vexing progressive throttle actuation.
