Besides the fact the bike is no longer being made, in the West we're suffering from a lack of Jeff Williams. He was consistently enthusiastic, positive and an organizer, which got others to join in. Our Triple Crown rides were epic.

I think you have to be an against-the-grain curmudgeon to own one of these; it doesn't make rational sense otherwise. Much less performance for much more money and all that.
It's harder for me to type nowadays as I'm almost completely paralyzed......going out in a blaze of glory like the nunster sounds good sometimes. It's harder to drag up the energy to be a smarta$$ anymore.
I want to say something about controversy. It takes a lot of courage to stand up to the herd when you are the minority opinion. Having said that I want to apologize to Chris Geuting; you were right on the money and I was very wrong. It took years of research but I did eventually come around after dropping the PC groupthink
I do really miss my S.

The R11S units were, and continue to be, so much fun and dependable as well. What fun having one or more since getting the first one in the fall of 98. Now, I still have it and two other S units, but in time plan to sell all the bikes except two, which I will keep simply because they have the lightest wet weight. All three of my S units are going however, and it is hard to accept that they just don't bring very much for what one ends up getting. All these thousands and thousands of miles in the mountains, chasing and being chased in "outrun-um packs" that can form like a storm on the plains, when excited and alert riders build "pull trains" of sport bikes running at speed. Many was the time that a pack of BMW units ran with and away from some very unsuspecting bike, especially in those early years of the 11S. Sweetie and I are going to be traveling more in cars as we head out West again, but I still plan to ride every time I can, but just on the lighter weight bikes I have, now that I am getting less strengthy. One of my favorite things about the forum were the photos from Carr in Colorado and anywhere else he went or still goes. We all have fine roads if we just look but some of the western states are just endless in the ride over remote terrain and drop dead sites of spiritual beauty. How lucky we are to be here, and I, for one, just hope we can hold on to it. The world population growth curve is deadly in its reality that we are going to self destruct and take everything else with us. Absorb your rides as if every one will be your last, and seek places of solitude and remoteness for your prayers. Be thankful for every day in this garden of life.
Let BMW know that we want a variable cam timing, pneumatic quad valve operated, drive by wire throttle, twin turbo, 7 speed CR trans, telelever front, ceramic valved, titanium rodded, 1000 cc twin with all handling traction and mode control progress that BMW can put on the table. We want the boxer to stay on forever and get even more efficient. Long live this one time forum...............

Well, I have an 01 prep, mostly stock, no ABS, bars below the triple clamp and a sheepskin on the saddle. I ride pretty much in a geographic triangle between Franklin, NC, Tellico Plains, TN and Suches, GA. This morning I rode a short little 1 1/2 hr jaunt on Joe Brown Hwy around Hiwassee Lake in NC. Some of you know this area. I love my 1100s! It glides around sweepers and will rail around tighter turns. I can sit up and sight see or pretend I'm a racer, the scenery either inspiring or not seen 'cause I'm having to focus on other things. The motor is dynamite , especially when keeping it in the meat of the torque curve. Today I was thinking for the life of me, I have a hard time understanding why so many ride the GS when an 1100S gives such a visceral connectedness to the road. For me, this is a special motorcycle and I'm sure others will continue to feel this way too, even as the Pelican Parts forum lives a maturing life.

I remember when I could screw all night every night, but things change. Some good, some not so good, that's one of the not so good. At least my bike runs every day.

He really was the glue that made things stick. Epic indeed.

So, in the end, is it really better to burn out or fade away?

Fading is rough. Somehow I grew up with a "help the world, do something great" brainwashing for lack of a better word. Now settling into my last career change before Social Security and deal with anxiety mostly; at least growing older I grew out of the manic-depression, no thanks to the Drs.

Don't like being away from the wife for more than a day, she has been my rock through all of this. That said I always felt like I was cheating on her just a little bit when I would take the S out for an afternoon spin. Not that eastern Iowa has that much in the way of challenging roads or world class scenery.

We make what we can of what we have around us. Would I get another S if I had gobs of money? I really don't know and I don't think about it.

Miss the chit-chat here but never having met any of you and only talking on the phone to a handful made it hard to feel like part of a crew. Still lurk - habits are hard to break.

I need a hobby, gave them all up to afford raising 4 kids. Don't find a lot of energy or enthusiasm left now that I see how pointless the old hobbies really were.

Dreading the November election, it reminds me of the lyrics from my younger days; "nobody's right if everybody's wrong".

PS: really wishing I could turn some of this purple but there's no satire in growing old.

Guest 24 just stopped briefly to say I didn't change my name 5 times. Moybin, I sold OBSSSN a few years back to a lad from Wisconsin. Have not heard from him since. I only have a 06 F650GS now that spends more time on the battery charger than the road. Jeff was a fine gentleman whom I admired for his wit and positive influence on the board. I still use ck's eagle flying low level over the water as my wallpaper on my computer and EZ and Curve for their help in sharpening my novice motorcycle skills. I'm happy that Dee and Ridemore are still having fun on the North Carolina roads and miss having Das Bikehaus where any all all Pelican were always welcomed with a beer and something good to eat. It's odd that the one day I chose to lurk in over a year was the day that ck started this thread. I've learned that it takes much less effort to be nice than to be an arsehole. hope all have a safe riding season.
