Day 6 continued-
Luckily it never rained that hard or long- ![]() ![]() ![]() In the distance is the Bear's Tooth that the pass is named after- ![]() ![]() See the white dots on the water? That is the hard rain bouncing off the surface- ![]() Turning east at the junction with Hwy 296 toward Cody, WY puts you on Chief Joseph Scenic Byway over Dead Indian Pass. I enjoy this road more than Bear Tooth- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Funny thing, I stayed in the same RV park as last year in Cody. Five hours after I got there two Harley riders came in after dark. They asked if I was the one that passed them at the top of Bear Tooth, yep. I remember they were in my way when I was taking the pic of the sign. Five hours later? I guess they went to Cook City for dinner. Now that I think of it, they were on the way to Alaska with their cheap $10 Walmart tents and flannel sleeping bags. Good luck. Alaska, why were they going south from Red Lodge to Cody?

Day 7 continued-
The afternoon ride would be Dee Jones' dirt route. About 100 miles from Rawlins to Steamboat, CO- ![]() When I saw my second hiker I stopped and asked where they were going. He was doing the Continental Divide trail and had hiked 32 miles that day. He really liked the cold cranberry drink I gave him- ![]() I love Aspen trees but none of my photos ever capture the real scene- ![]() ![]() Found a good campsite at Pearl Lake and watched a pretty sunset- ![]() ![]()

Day 8- Pearl Lake to Paonia, CO 213 miles
The day looks good starting at my room with a view- ![]() I spotted this restaurant in Carbondale and I don't think I would like the combination. Is it Chinese style Japanese food or Japanese style Chinese food? Maybe I should have asked- ![]() The clouds over Beijin-Tokyo should have been a clue of what was coming at McClure Pass, rain- ![]() Dodged the rain over the pass, made it to Paonia and camped under the scoreboard, 2135 miles after leaving home. Time to relax.

Thanks for the trip report and fantastic pictures. Having recently retired, you've inspired me to get my butt out West to do some riding.

Definition in english, hole with water at the bottom.
![]() Sorry Ralf, there is a drawback to changing our ride schedule around. You have to wait through all of the 'me getting there drivel' before we get to the part where you are involved. I had to work yesterday too. ![]()

The only Pelicans camping at the goalposts this year were Ralf, Bad to the Bown and myself-
![]() Jarhead Rider and Mundis were in the trees. Always good to see you Keith. Sorry Mundis I stopped by a number of times but you were always gone. Bill Swartzwelder and his better half Cathryn stopped by Friday but I was the only one home. We walked around town and had ice cream. Thanks for coming by to visit, I enjoyed seeing you guys again. CK came in Friday afternoon. Friday's teen spaghetti dinner- ![]() On Saturday, CK, Ralf and I went for a long walk around town to see the sights and get some cherries. Saw a cool airplane/travel trailer and stopped at junk shop/garage sale. Found some automotive shocks that must be related to Steely Dan in William Burroughs' book 'Naked Lunch'- ![]() ![]()

Day 9-Paonia to Echo Park, CO 213 miles
As Ralf and I head towards Seattle we discover art in Carbondale- ![]() Here we are pretty much at the top of a pass north of Riffle, CO and about 20 miles away from a paved road. My oil and check engine lights have come on again. Turns out gravel and dirt were getting thrown up and jamming the cool fan. A couple minutes sticking my fingers in to turn it frees things up and we are good to go. This act would be repeated every couple days on the way home- ![]() More aspen trees after the fan- ![]() Is this an omen for our campsite?- ![]() I never figured out if Ralf thinks I am #1 or I should be looking up- ![]() No worries about a wildfire at the camp. The road goes way off to the left- ![]() Beautiful drive/road down to the junction of the Yampa and Green Rivers at Echo Park- ![]() The campground is just ahead with a view of the river and the big rock face- ![]() Scenic place and two years ago I walked for hours along the river but this year the bugs were horrible. We only made it about 15 minutes before being eaten alive then heading back to camp. Horseflies left my legs bleeding- ![]() ![]()
