Question
Hi all,
I have just put a new Staintune on my BCR - can NOT believe the improvement in throttle response and power. The bike REALLY goes now. Staintune build quality awsome, did not need to remove rear wheel but did need to move rear master cylinder a bit. Sounds awsome with the baffles out too. The chaps next door to my work reckon it sounds a bit Britten like at higher rev levels. They should know cos my work is next door to the Britten M/cycle Company ![]() Anyway - before I put the pipes on the bike farted, popped and missed when you rolled off the throttle - say coming into a corner or up to the lights. It was quite bad, if I blipped the throttle it sometimes stalled. The pipes have helped but the problem is still there. Anyone have any ideas - any wisdom much appreciated. TIA KiwiPhil |

I have come to the conclusion that the S comes from the factory in a very mediocre state of tune. My solution was the Staintune, Boxer Performance cam sprockets (for a little extra mid range, though not required), and the gem... an FIM chip tailored for the setup. FIM in australia makes something like 9 chips for the different variations: Staintune, Staintune + Sprockets, Staintune + Cam + Sprockets, etc. etc.
If you do any one thing to solve the stalling, and mediocre running, definitely install an FIM chip. You won't be sorry. The bike will run as smoothly as it should have from the factory, and you'll have noticeably more power and better throttle response. Cheers. |

i concur with johnny...
had the pleasure of doing the staintune, induct, and FIM chip (once again thanks johnny)...the difference was unbelievable. this is how the bike should have shipped. all those symptoms were experienced with my SBX from day one. now, all but the most infrequent pops are gone. in an earlier post i had praised the australian motorsport gurus for putting the edge on the german machine. follow johnny's recommendations and you wont regret it.

While a chip is certain to help and I'd say try it if you have the funds, half of your trouble, the popping on decel, sounds more like you have an exhaust leak than anything else. So check all your connections and clamps and snug everything down. You might even see some soot around a troublesome connection.
All that being said, my, what I consider to be pretty open pipes, do a real nice slow build up "Wuuuuuuuuuump" kind of backfire sometimes on decel, but nothing like the "Pah pah POW!" I'd get on my old Supermotard. That puppy would blow flames out the back. And can I tell ya? Lucky you mate! Wish I worked next to a shop like that. I never would have left them alone. "lemme help lemme help puuuuullleeease com'om com'on com'on...I'lll be your best friend..." |

Just to balance the delivery here, I've got a stock bike with respect to the engine and have never had any issues with stalling, backfiring, or popping on decel.

Have you checked throttle free play? I can make my bike pop on command when decellerating by playing with the throttle. The next time you are decellerating and the popping starts, make sure your throttle is totally rolled forward. It is possible someone has adjusted your idle speed by tensioning the throttle cable which will cause exactly what youre describing. These bikes arent carbed,........so dont adjust the throttle cable unless it has excessive slack. Just something to check for. On a further note,.....the motronic control unit has a spot where you can make even a stock R11S pop and crackle on hard decelleration with partially openned throttle. It gets confused as to whether to "cruise" or "decellerate" when the throttle is partially open. So depending on your riding style, any R11S with a motronic hooked up can crackle and pop, stock or not.
