Smile All brands ABS brake systems data!!

To change a bit from the war thead:

Remember the thread we had not long ago about Ducati ST4 ABS brakes? Remember I asked if someone had any data?

I just read in the magazine La Moto a comparison test (made by Motorrad, thus hopefully serious).

The conclussions:

- Conventional systems with radial pump (Duc 999) or radial brakes (Kawa ZX6R) are more powerful and have better feel than conventional systems.

- In non ideal conditions (wet, sand, oil) of course all ABSs brake far better than non ABS systems.

- What's new, and more interesting for those who still doubt about ABS: In ideal conditions (good tarmac, warm tyres, professional riders, etc) Ducati's ABS now also outbrakes the best conventional systems.

I'll copy the data. Pity I don't have a scanner. Data go like this:

Bike
Braking distance (100km/h to 0)
Deceleration (m/s2)
Comment

Duc ST4 ABS
37,5 m
10,29
Conventional feeling, inobtrusive ABS works well when really needed. Only warning: it's easy to do stoppies. ABS weights less than 5 kg and it's placed near the C of G.

Duc 999 (radial pump)
38,9 m
9,92
Very powerful and good feeling

Kawa ZX6R (radial brakes and the lightest bike in the comparo)
39,0 m
8,89
Very powerful and good feeling

BMW R1150RT (integral ABS and the heaviest bike, I would have liked to see the R1100S)
40,2 m
9,60
Not so good feeling, specially when slow. Stable. Probably the best for emergency stops. Telelever helps a lot.

Honda VFR 800 ABS CBS
41,7 m
9,25
It feels good and stable for tourism. Weird feeling when racing hard. Not as powerful as others, still better than most conventional systems.

Do you think that sport bikes will include ABS in the next years?

Interesting. I'd not seen data before. Had only read the factory claim that the new duc abs stopped as well as the stock system, or better. This seems to bear it out. Nice. I don't see it hitting pure sportbikes unless it ends up being driven by liability concerns or legislation. I do see it creeping into more and more bikes though, especially tourers and sport tourers, then maybe more cruisers and standards. The latter perhaps more slowly, as those guys are traditionalists, or at least tend that way. As usual, I could be wrong.

The Duc made stoppies on wet asphalt conditions...the German magazine thought it was a bit too agressive for ABS (when people have ABS they don't suspect a stoppie or flipping over)

I'm for ABS if it's implemented correctly.....the early units leave something to desired.

Joe,

Have you spent any significant time on an R1100SA?

No ...............Your right I'm drawing conclusions from other sources......some of the people I know personally and I trust their jugment.....others have stated the problems on this BB.

FWIW... I think the ABS on my Audi Quattro sucks too It kicks in much too early.

Hmmmm,

I haven't that much on the most recent ABS on the S, but I've done the earlier ABS on an S, and the later on the 1150R/RT. In fact, the RT has already been tweaked again, making it merely very objectionable instead of horrible. That on the R and S I dislike, but could live with.

Haven't tried duc's yet, but it sounds good. I think they've got it just right. Maximum braking, but no locking. That ought to be the idea. Arguably, they could back off a percent an prevent stoppies, but it still sounds great. If BMW gets ones that good, I might accept the weight penalty.

Never used ABS on a bike, but I LOVE it on my VW... ITs hands down the best implementation of ABS I've ever encountered in a 4 wheeled vehicle.

Good to hear from you Rapt.

The g.f. just got a 2000 Jetta. I like the ABS in it quite a bit too.
Wish it had the tdi or the six, but a cool car with nice brake for sure.
