Coding Steering Angle Sensor E83 X3

Hello all.

A little background first:
Got the light trifecta on the dash. Was able to check with my Schwaben/Foxwell scanner and found SAS code and a DSC code related to SAS. Recalibrated SAS and fault would go away only to return a day or so later. Checked live data for SAS and it was a little choppy as you turn the wheel, so I feel its safe to say that the SAS was going out.

Replaced the SAS with a new one (Royal PITA) and can see live data (looks good but not centered, needs calibrating). Foxwell/Schwaben won't let me calibrate it until I code the new sensor. However, the coding operation fails every time I try it. I even plugged the old sensor back up and it will not code it either. I updated the scanner software to the latest and still no better.

Anyone have a similar experience? Advice? I guess my fallback will be to take it to a BMW shop and see if they can do it with their $$$ equipment.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I figured this out this morning. Evidently BMW wants you to have over 13.5V on the system before coding so just sitting there with the ignition switch on at 12V won't do it. I tried running the car so the alternator would bring the voltage up, but this did not work for whatever reason. Maybe they don't want you to do this with the car running. So I hooked up a battery charger and it worked. Hope this helps someone.
