countdown timer

Hello, I am new to the boxster family and have a few questions. I recently purchased a 2002 boxster and noticed that when I turn the key to the on position the display begins to count down, usually from 5. Could somebody tell me why this is. Also if anyone has tips on winter storage or any general tips I would apperciate it.
Thank You!!
Mike

P.s. I also own a 1984 944

Is it the oil gauge? The timer is there to tell you when the oil has run down into the pan and your reading will be more accurate. Check your owner's manual for more information.
