1st to 2nd shift problem
And 3rd to 2nd- especially when cold, it doesn't want to engage into 2nd, gets better as it warms up. Lately has been infrequently popping out of 2nd gear also. Any quick fixes, or is it tranny time? Oh yeah- it's a 2001 S 6 speed.

That is a common problem with the 6 speed tranny. I installed the Evo aluminum shift link and it really helps me shifting into 2nd in winter. It is still stiff but it doesn't pop out if I firmly shift into 2nd.

You might want to consider changing the gear oil in the transaxle as well to either a Royal Purple or Redline product. It will help the shift action, particulary when cold.

O.K. This is what I bought.
Evolution Motorsports Billet Shift Linkage > PORSCHE - Porsche 986 Boxter / S - :: RENNSPORT ONE :: Fusing ones innermost passion with the Motorsports lifestyle! I also have B&M short shifter along with this Evo shift link. It definitely helped my shifting. Our host also carry them.

Short shift kits tend to make this worse. Also, there is an alignment jig for the shift cables that you can use to try to align them. I don't have the part number handy, but I have one in my garage, I will try to dig it out later on.

If it's got the 2nd gear popout issue it's going to need to be gone through to remedy it. You want to send it/take it to someone very familiar with the 996 street and Boxster S issues. It requires a 50 ton press and some specialized knowledge to go through it and repair it so that it doesn't happen again. There's a design flaw with the box that needs to be addressed to make it right and just buying new service parts from the dealer will eventually get you back to the same place. There's guys who do G50's all day long who don't know how to fix this box properly. Given your location I would take it to Bobby Hart at California Motorsports in Havasu City. He's one of the guys who figured out the problems early on and has been fixing them longer than most. Tell him that I sent you.

Try putting Swepco in it first. I know it's a long shot, but many people have told me that this works miracles for situations like this...

Actually, Wayne is right because I also had the fluid flushed out and replaced. My mechanic did use Swepco for the replacement fluid. I guess the combination of aluminum shift link and Swepco cured the popped out in second for me even when it is really cold outside. First to second gear is not the smoothest when it is cold but it doesn't popped out anymore.

UPDATE- Thanks to all for the help! Changed fluid to swepco, and by god it worked! When the mechanic took out the old he said it had the consistency of water. Would have done it myself, but i'm in the middle of a 911 rebuild at the moment, so I have no spare jackstands! Goes into gear like it should, and no more popping out, I was very skeptical, but it did the trick! BTW, car has 75K on it, and wasn't ever done.

Not to hijack this thread but.....
I don't have a 'popping out' issue, rather sometimes it is difficult to get it in. To 3rd that is. Found some advice on alignment and shift kits, but ot where they specifically address this issue. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. |

At 75k mi on the original fill, anything fresh would be better than what was in there.
![]() This is not to detract from the Swepco. Just saying that the Swepco isn't so much the fix as the old worn out gearoil was clearly the problem.
