I suggest that you get the proper triple-square tool and remove the door catch and take a closer look. Looks like paint to me, I don't think this is causing your problem. You may have wear in your latch mechanism in your door. I think the shop is guessing and I think they are on the wrong track.

Remove that piece and then post pics of what you find...

Are you certain the driver's side of the car wasn't hit in an accident at some point? When you have a gap like and tell tale cracks, there must have been an "event" at some point in the car's life.

Triple squares are common sockets, like any other socket. Go to your local tool supplier.

Here in the states- Sears, Snap-On, Cornwell, Matco etc. I don't know suppliers in Europe.

EDIT: Hazet. Hazet makes triple square tools, and is a European company

I wouldn't worry about taking off the door catch, you can't make it worse. Yes, your door lamp is probably related to this issue - the switch is located inside the door latch mechanism. Here are some articles to assist you removing the door panel and then getting to the door lock:

Pelican Technical Article: Door Panel Removal / Mirror Switch Replacement - 986 Boxster (1997-04) - 987 Boxster (2005-08)

Pelican Technical Article: Door Lock Mechanism / Door Handle - 986 Boxster (1997-04) - 987 Boxster (2005-08)

For a 2000 Boxster, the screws are N 907 985 02 and the catch itself is 3B0 837 033 P. Just cut and paste these into our search engine to get pricing and to order.

We have triple-square tool sets in our catalog, although I'm not sure what size that is:
