Question for Wayne

Wayne, (or any other techie's looking in) Is it possible to change the hydraulic tappets without removing the engine. This may seem drastic as I dont yet know the source of the clicking, would still like to know if the existing ones 'drain down' from standing, (see my other post) and how best to re-pressurise them.

Thanks for any help/opinion

Hi there. Yes, it is possible, but incredibly annoying. You can do a camshaft change (which is the same thing) with the engine in the car, but there is not a lot of clearance. Try this to help your lifters - change the viscosity of your oil (if your using a heavy weight, then switch to a light synthetic), and then change back. This has helped me in the past with sticky lifters. Doesn't work every time, but sometimes it does and it's a lot better than tearing the engine apart.

Q2

Thanks Wayne, I know its Mobil 1 at the moment, but do not know what viscosity it is. I was going to put in the 'New Edge' 0W 40 and see if that cured it.

Will these things pressurise on tickover, or will it need driving to do so, obviously dont want to drive it if that's likely to cause more damage.
