Hello there! New to the forums
Hello everyone.
My names Andy. I've been doing nothing but reading up on this forum ever since I purchased my Boxster! Thought I got a good deal on a low mileage car then find out ALL the terrible stories about the IMS failure. I get a little nervous every time I start the engine! It runs great and the suspension is nice and stiff. It's a one owner car with a lot of factory upgrades. It's a 1997 with 38k miles now. Clean Carfax and the mileage was confirmed by the dealer the PO use to bring it to. Enough about the details let see some pictures!! (sorry for the crappy pictures. It's from my cell phone) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Rockster; 03-28-2011 at 06:45 PM.. |

Nice car Andy. Don't get over concerned about the IMS. Use common sense. change the oil often, no more than 5k unless you track it then do it around 3k. and look and listen for signs. Oil leak- stop and have the car towed to your shop and find out what it is. Unusual noise. Have some body look at it right away. Don't ignore thing but don't be neurotic either. Enjoy the car and drive it the way it was meant to be driven.
Nice pics, beautiful car.

I've read that it's better to drive it a little more aggressively then to baby it all the time. Is there any truth to that? |

Funny i was reading your post and thought one of my freinds was making fun of me. My name is Andrew but a few of my freinds call me Andy. I too just got my Boxster and have been paranoid driving it, i even got a clean bill of health from a Porsche mechanic who builds race cars. I drive in traffic and hear a noise and im like "oh **** thats the ims" but usually its someone elses car. The second day i had it, my son left a frisbee under my tire, i didnt see it ran it over and it made a loud cracking sound, i was like omg i ****ed the car up and its only been two days. Anyways your not the only one who feels like that. My mechanic did tell me tho, Drive it like you stole it! Just stay on top of those oil changes. Heres a pic of mine.

LOL Drew on the Frisbee... would have loved to seen your face when it happened
Welcome Andy, I"m new to the Boxster board too and have been reading alot about the IMS failures as well. I've heard the same things on babying the car... keep it tach'd up to 3k+ often and drive the car like you stole it. It seems the low mileage 'babied' cars get afflicted more often than others. Black and Burl against gray leather... love it! Beautiful car! Looks like you've got an aftermarket exhaust on there as well. Sound good? What brand is it? And, I've never seen those 3 winglet looking things behind your 3rd brake light. What are those?

Hey Troy thanks for the comments!
I really enjoy driving the Boxster! My driving habits are a little bit on the aggressive side so I won't be having any problems keeping her tach'd up. The exhaust note above 3k rpm til red-line line is beautiful. Which helps me keep the engine revs up there. The three wing-let things above the 3rd brake light I have no idea where they came from. The PO installed them. I want to remove them but don't want to damage the paint so they are staying on( for now) The exhaust that's on there is this one Porsche | Tequipment II | Porsche Sport Exhaust System (Boxster) Thanks again guys for the warm welcome! ![]() |

Amazing car for a 97, exceptionally clean. Nice options too! I bought the same steering wheel to put in my 2000 'S'.

Thanks Wayne and Whip!
The condition and interior is what sold me! I've been looking at a few different Boxsters before I bought this one. Some of the newer ones I looked at didn't even look half as good. So I went for the older one in better condition. |

I want to put those pedals in mine, I think it is a great look, I just don't know what brand to get...also don't want to spend 300 bucks for them, though if they fit and install good I might bite the bullet and do it.

Whip,
If you are going to track your car I recommend the rennline pedals w extenders. Really makes heel and toe easy (even for someone with no talent like me) Andy welcome to the forum. Don't worry too much about the IMS but do the upgrade when the clutch starts going. Owning a boxster is supposed to help relieve stress not add to it! sf bay area has plenty of boxster fun around. Boxster brunch at Alice's, many ax's, and Plenty of good track opportunities. Not to mention plenty of good twisty roads around to stretch the Box's legs. |

SMC, I might do some cone pca type stuff a couple of times just to learn the limits of the car, I used to do that back in the early 80s with my old Horizon! I will say I really want them for looks. I need to read up on heal and toe, seen it talked about but it's a new thing to me

Cool deal, I think we'll do an article on the pedal installation soon, for the 996 book...

Rockster, question, I have the same steering wheel as you and I just got in a new airbag for the second time and the color still doesn't match. The wheel is wood and black leather and the bag keeps coming in gray, it sort of looks like your bag isn't completely black either or maybe it is the picture. It takes so long from these things to come from germany that I'm thinking of just dying it myself! This one i'm keeping until they bring in the correct thing, I've been driving around without a bag too much and want to enjoy my car.

SMCGeary: Do you happen to have a link to any of those events?
I'm interested in joining the festivities! |

Go to PCA golden gate region web page and you will see some of everything. The loma prieta PCA site has consistently scheduled autocross stuff down here near the Monterey peninsula. Coastal driving.org has great track days and instruction. I would go to MotorsportReg.com : Online registration management tools for driving and social events and set up an account. This deal gives you all events within a certain mileage of you from many different groups. Send me an email if you have any questions on anything. smcge0@aol.com
