Window Reset Precedure

I thought I read some time back there was a window reset procedure.

A buddy of mine has a Boxster. I think the battery must have died.

He can get the windows to go down slightly when the door is opened or
with the key, but the windows will not raise or lower with the switch.

he's remote to me -- so a link would be great help.

thanks,

mike

Our 98 986 does this from time to time when the top has been down and left down for a few days...when we put the top back up it sometimes will 'forget' the top is up and the windows spaz out....I unlatch the top open it 1/2 way cycle it back closed...make sure the latch is secure and then I with the key on...cycle the windows 1 at a time all the way down HOLD the switch for the 5 count and then all the way up again 5 count and then do the opposite side....works for us...I have been told by our local GREAT indie that it's either the microswitch in the top center or most likey the springs that hold the hook latch with pressure when you close the top. Porsche wants a ton for a new hook latch he just replaces the springs with allot of success.

Good luck

Gents... Would a depleted battery cause the windows to not drop? My Boxster S is exibiting this behavior but when I hooked up the Porsche Charger noticed the battery was not fully charged.

Probably not. Are they not dropping on both sides?

Wayne.

They both drop when I unlatch the top about an 1". My drivers side does not drop as much as my passenger side when I pull the door handle. And when I close that door it catches the top.

If I am wrong, feel free to correct me, but there seems to be some confusion about the window “reset” being able to fix a window that is not dropping enough and catching on the top when the door is opened. It will not. The reset just lets the car remember what the last position of the window was. When the window is fully up and the door handle is pulled, the car runs the window down for a time interval that should be enough for the window to clear. If the window still does not clear then it’s a mechanical issue and a new window regulator is the only real fix.

The only “cheat” I can think of is to adjust the up stops a little so the window does not rise as far. The problem with this is that the window may not seal properly when up.

After reading the posts I do not think it is the regulator. The reason is the Windows work fine when raising and lowering with interior switch and when opening/closing top they lower one inch. Is is only when pulling the handle on door only one does not lower enough. I am thinking it may be the switch in the handle? Does anyone have a part name and number for the switch in the drivers handle?

It's my understanding that the regulator develops slack in it over time from use and the cables stretching. When the motor runs it does not move as far as it should because of the split second that gets wasted taking up the slop in the mechanism.

From personal experience, it was the only thing that fixed mine. The window worked fine, it just would not clear the top.

Hope you get it figured out, that catching window is irritating!

I had the same problem on one of my cars - it was a worn out regulator. I tried to adjust the heck out of it, but finally, the installation of a new regulator fixed the problem.

I disagree. If there is slop in the regulator and it's slightly worn, then it will lower with the switches fine, and lower with the roof, but the fine motor movement required when opening the door will fail to work properly...

Wayne,

I am going with the Windows Regulator. How can I disagree with the guy who wrote the book? ;-) Pelican Part#996-542-075-04-M100

I think it will fix the problem for you. Nothing's 100% guaranteed, but I think based upon my own experience that this will solve it.

How long would you estimate this task would take to complete? I have had the door panel off before?

chamilun 09-04-2011 06:41 AM

Wayne,
just completed regulator replacement using your book. many thanks.

a question: my 99 (that was unfortunately totaled) was very quick to lower when pulling the handle. My 03, now with the new regulator, is not as quick, and doesnt seem to drop as far. It clears, so the depth is fine, but what about the speed?

thansk

Replaced the Window Regulator also and fixed the issue. Thanks Wayne!
