I had a problem a while back with one of my brake lights not lighting. I thought the problem was resolved by re-seating the bulb, but now I'm not so sure. The other day I tried using my rear fog light and the icon came on to check it. Just like before with the brake light problem, the fuse checked ok, but the socket on the tail light circuit board was dead. The car is at an independent shop today for a brake flush and I asked them to look into the fog light problem. They got the same results I did. In fact they traced the wire back from the fog light and it still was dead. The owner said he thought the lights are controlled by some sort of a master control box and maybe the fault was with it. Does anybody know anything about this "control box", or if it even exists? The wires from the fuse box to the rear are not binding or shorting to the body and the grounds are fine. Anybody have any ideas?

Further conversation with the technician revealed that this "box" is probably a module that is responsible for analyzing the the current state of the lighting system, if not other systems too, and sending a signal to the instrument cluster to light up the "check xxx light" icon. Anyone know where this module is located?

I cant help on the location or existance of a "control box" for the lights, but you should mention the year and model of your car as they are not all the same.
You should probably start by having your tech read the codes from the control modules, this may help to point you in the right direction. You need a special tool to do this, and most good porsche shops should have one to help diagnose issues. Fog lights draw lots of current, so there is probably a relay somewhere to take the electrical load off the switch. I think the relays are located above the fuse box. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in to help. Best of luck.

AlK,
The rear lighting (and other stuff) is controlled by the Rear Controller. Our cars have 4 main controllers, Front, Rear, Left Door, & Right Door. Sent you a PM. BTW, I also have an '07 987, so if you have any questions, I may be able to help. Regards, paul... Last edited by paulv; 05-23-2011 at 08:18 AM.. Reason: changes |
