Replacement Convertible Top Sources?
It wasn't very cold this morning. Maybe mid to high 60s. However, when putting my 13 year old top down, I heard a loud crack! I stopped the top from opening and started to close it so I could see what that sound was. Sure enough, it was the plastic window.
I was pretty sure I saw an ad on one of the forums I visit for a replacement top that costs about $1,000. Anyone know what that site/company was? Or, is there a better one I should be looking at? Luckily, it's nothing but sunshine for the rest of the week and through the weekend. But I'll have to get a replacement top on quickly, as we're forecasted for scattered rainshowers for the early part of next week... |

On another forum, others are just replacing the plastic window. Anyone know of a shop around the Montgomery, AL area that does this kind of work? Or even within a several hours' drive?

I found a shop, Capital City Upholstery, in Montgomery that'll charge me $1,600 ($1,100 for top/shipping, $100 tax, $400 install) to replace my top w/ a GAHH glass top with the German A5 material. Or, they'll charge me $500 to install a top I bring them. I looks like I can buy the same glass top with German A5 from GAHH for $925 + $50 shipping. So I'll save about $125 if I bring them my own top. Unfortunately, they're about two weeks backlogged right now. I couldn't even make an appointment. The guy asked that I call back in about two weeks to see how the schedule looks. Guess I'll just have to seal the crack with some packing tape for now. We're projected for rain all next week.

Also, the shop told me tops with plastic windows should not be raised/lowered when the ambient temperature is below 68F degrees. He says that comes from the manufacturer.

Ordered the $925 top from GAHH. Hope it comes by Friday. I'm really thinking of tackling the job myself, with the help of the 101 book. Mostly because the shop is *at least* two weeks backlogged.

I'm a little late in this thread, but I know the GAHH products and you did well. Please let us know how this installation goes. I think you can do it and I'm 100% behind you.
Go slow and come back if you hit a snag. If you have to rent a car for 2 days, do it. You can get a lot of rental for 500 bucks. |

Well, do document this and post. You should write an article for Pelican as well.

Nah, the pelican article is pretty good as is. No need recreating that work.
However, as I was reviewing the photos, I noticed the plastic pieces I bought don't match the photos. I went out to the car and confirmed, I have the same plastic pieces as is in the photos. The ones I bought are slightly different. Appears the ones on the car are slightly longer. I went back and confirmed I did order the right part numbers. I looked at the new pieces and the part numbers don't match. However, the plastic bag the parts came in had the right part number. I wonder if the plastic pieces I got are for the '03 and newer models? And how did they get put into packaging that was marked improperly? EDIT: Looking at Mike Focke's webpage, appears I have the updated plastic sliders. Not sure how I got the old style sliders when I ordered from the dealer, and asked for them to check to see if I had the latest part numbers. Third picture from the bottom: replacingthetop-adiy - mikefocke2 Now, trying to decide whether to start the job tomorrow morning and take my chances that I don't break the original plastic pieces. Or wait until I can get back to the dealer and they can get the right part in? Last edited by bar10dah; 10-15-2011 at 11:30 PM.. |

Did the job yesterday. Took 7.5 hours. It's a LOT of work, but a moderate DIYer can get it done.

Just an update, top is holding up very well. The slight wrinkling is almost gone. And the top closes normally after several weeks of stretching.
VERY happy I decided to do this job as a DIY.
