Follow the 101 projects book or the factory?

The front bump stop is shown in the book (and here in figure 8) as being mounted on top of the bellows.

When I took the strut apart, it was mounted inside the bellows and the lower collar on the bump stop seemed to be made specifically to fit inside the top of the bellows.

Which way is correct?

The way you took it apart is correct. The bump stop does insert slightly into the bellows.
