I recently purchased a 2006 Boxster S with minimal options. The car was purchased from a reputable used car dealer who handles a lot of Porsches and does a lot of service but, not being a full-fledged new car dealer, doesn't have all of the factory diagnostic equipment. The car came with one glitch that they have committed to fix. The driver's side window does not raise that last 6 mm when the door is closed. It raises fully just fine manually with the door button and it drops the 6 mm when the door is opened but it does not return to its fully closed position when the door is closed (or when the roof is lowered). The passenger window operates just as it should.
Interestingly, when I was checking the car over prior to purchase, I noted that the battery had a sticker on the side indicating it was manufactured in August, 2013, so it must have been replaced just prior to acquisition by the dealer. This is consistent with the fact that, when I picked up the car upon purchase, it wouldn't pass an emissions inspection because not all of the sensor readings in the on-board computer had re-set. In reading the owners manual and sources online I discovered that the car has to re-learn the fully closed position of the windows after the battery is changed. Since this sounded like a plausible explanation for my problem I tried the procedure of closing the window fully and then pressing the close button again, but to no avail. I have a question relating to the owner's manual information on re-learning the closed window position. On page 28, the manual says: Storing end position of the windows If the battery is disconnected and reconnected, the windows will not be raised automatically when the door is closed. 1. Close the windows with the rocker switch once. 2. Press the rocker switch upwards again to store the end position of the windows in the control unit. The last word of step 1, "once," is set in bold. Is it possible that if the window was raised and lowered a couple of times after a new battery install that it is no longer possible to re-set the end position without disconnecting the battery again? I will probably try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery just to see. BUT, can you tell me if, a) there are other things I need to "reset" after doing the disconnect/reconnect cycle, and b) if I need to do anything else with the windows? That is, should I lower them prior to disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and then do the "close windows once and press the switch again" routine or should I leave the windows up and, after the disconnect/reconnect, lower them, raise them, and press the button again. The dealer from whom I purchased the car appears to have a good relationship with the new car Porsche dealer in our area and suggested I take it there for a diagnostic read-out on their factory computer. Does that system really get into things like window openings?? To this old shade-tree type it seems hard to imagine. Thank you for any insight into this obscure problem. |
