02 boxster overheating.
Hi
I got a 02 boxster base. I changed the water tank, it was cracking; and put on new water pump and thermostat. I added water as coolant (It's summer and i am just trying to get it running for now). The car sits on stand and running on idle, I rev it up occasionally to help water go through the system. I had the bleeder clip on, and I even had the coolant filling cap off. The car will run for about 10 mins then when the temp hits 200 F the fan is on and then the temp quickly topped.... I am wondering what could be wrong??? Feel like the water can't get to the front for circulation...Any special technique to bleed the boxster? Or you have to be driving to make sure the water is circulating? Or the T union is bad? Or the filling cap is bad? I really don't want to change a bunch of parts without knowing what actually went wrong... Please help... |

Could be an air pocket I agree with JFP.
Can you feel if the coolant hoses in front of the car are getting hot? If not you may have an air pocket, or circulation issue. I usually like to run the car at 1500 rpm with the cap off. Then when the temp gets to around 180F I will put the cap back on making sure the bleeder clip is up, and then run around 2500 RPM to make sure that the coolant can circulate. In your case I would watch the temperature gauge very closely. Let us know how it goes! |

Go to the tech articles and follow the procedure. Use the proper coolant which is also going to lube the pump. Mix with distilled water. Short cuts will result in more problems.

Thank you. I have read a few articles regarding getting rid of air pockets. They suggests to jack up the car and make sure the radiator is the highest point. So that means for 986, we will have to jack up the rear to make sure the plastic coolant tank is the highest point, is it correct? |

Yuta,
The jacking method may work. But really you need to use the correct equipment to be sure. Overheating the engine could be expen$ive ! http://www.amazon.com/UView-550000-Airlift-Cooling-Checker/dp/B0002SRH5G

+1 on the AirLift!!! This will also tell you if you have any leaks prior to filling the cooling system during the "vacuuming" phase. & You will need an air compressor to use the airlift FYI.

I just tried to lower the front of the car and turned my heat max. The engine still overheats. The blower don't blow hot air at all! I am pretty sure the water can't get to the front... I am gonna stop trying... Every time the engine overheats...I am so scared I may damage the engine if I keep trying... |

We had a saying at the shop I worked at, that each minute the engine spent with the temp gauge in the red was going to cost another $1000!! Definitely better to wait. Just curious, what brand of water pump and thermostat are you using?
