Filter Question

I was changing the filter on my '99 Boxster today and noticed a spring loaded valve in one end of the old filter. The filter fell out of the base when I removed the canister, so I can not tell which end it belongs in.

I assume that it is a pressure relief valve for the filter to circulate oil if the filter is clogged. I that correct? It appears that it needs to go in the bottom of the cannister. Is this correct?
