Is it possible to delete the PCM and install a regular radio?

The simple answer is yes. The details depend on the model year of the car. Many install an after market radio, GPS, bluetooth, etc capable unit.

If you want to go with a double-DIN sized unit, this is probably your best option:
Suncoast Porsche Parts & Accessories Aftermarket Radio Installation Kit You can also use the Suncoast kit with a single DIN radio and a pocket to fill up the double DIN sized hole, most good audio retailers like Crutchfield will provide a single DIN sized pocket for use with your install if necessary. Note that if you have Bose you will need the MOST fiber optic integration kit that is an additional $550, that allows your aftermarket head unit to interface with the vehicle fiber optic network and factory Bose amps. Another option is to simply run new speaker wires from the back of your head unit directly to the speakers, but many of the Bose factory speakers are 2 ohm which can also present an issue with the head unit's built in amplifier.

You can definitely remove the PCM system, but you'll have to replace all of the stereo components, from the head unit to the amplifier(s), the CD changer in the front trunk (if applicable), the DVD drive for navigation in the front trunk (if applicable). It would also be recommended to replace/upgrade the speakers and sub-woofers at this time.
The only down-side is you will no longer be able to get radio/track information in the center display under your tachometer. And the cost.

In my 03 Boxster it threw 2 new codes - one in the instrument cluster (9114) and one in the air conditioning (38).
I had mine replaced a few weeks ago and these are new codes for me. I understand it will take a trip the dealer to have it removed in the PWIS. The car runs fine. |
