Replacing soft top frame problem

Hello! I removed my frame and top to put in a new rear plastic window (1997 986). After removing it, I used the top up/down switches to closed the clam shell cover. Now I need to put the frame/top back in but cannot get the clam shell to open to service position. When I use the up/down top switches there is a moment of sound then a big pop, first from the one side top transmission and then the other. But there is no opening of the clam shell! Clam shell cover is currently flush to rear lid as if it were normally closed. Also, I have not removed the top transmission cables so all they should both be in sync. The top previously worked fine though I found one red ball rod to be off and laying in the pocket. This was due to the ball nut having backed off and fell out.

Please note that the top's switch is not connected (since I can't put it in the bracket area yet until I get the clam shell up). Also note that the "top" icon is on on the dash and will not go off. BTW I did have the parking brake on when attempting to move the clam shell.

Please advise... Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff - take a look at the link below to our site's DIY tech articles on the 986 platform. We have several articles that relate to the convertible top repair in the Body section. Please let us know if you have any questions!

RE: Tech section...

I have reviewed those posts. My problem is REINSTALLING, which now I am stuck at because of the clam shell issue. I don't really want to disconnect the cables from the motor to raise the clam shell because then I will have to resync the transmissions. I was thinkink of trying to connect the switch from the frame (maybe putting the top on the seat temporarily to be near the wires, etc.). Then maybe I could manually press that switch while trying to use the up/down dash switches. Maybe that would allow for the clam shell to go up.

For the followers of this thread: I am now all good. All you need to do is plug in the top switch (enough slack to set top by rear wheel on ground). Then the up/down switches worked as advertised for the clam shell... Jeff
