I have always supported the front of my R53 with jack stands under the front subframe. I've done this MANY times and it seems to work well. Is this a bad idea?

As long as you are on a solid piece that will not be damaged and the jack stands sit straight and even. However, MINI recommneds using the jack pads to support the vehicle, so that is my preferred method.
