My **power steering pump continued to run on ignition 'off' after the battery had been changed.I had to disconnect the battery to stop it running til I could get to the garage.
The next morning I reconnected the battery to drive my son to college. I had to do a sharp 3 point turn and during this lost the power steering. I turned off the ignition , then restarted. The steering returned as normal. I drove home, switched off the engine and the continuing pump noise had stopped.I took the car in for diagnostic and the mechanic said he could find nothing wrong and the pump's electronics had most likely reset itself? Is this possible? Everyone else has said that once ** this happens, the pump is done for?

This is quite common, the pump staying running. 99% of the time the pump is faulty. I would replace the pump.

There is a recall on this, I just got back the money from them after 6 months. If you do it yourself (its not hard) you can get one from BBA on ebay for around $250 and it is guaranteed for life (not the parts life either), get a new fan and special oil. If you take it to mini, they will do it for free but the pump isnt guaranteed...
