If my jack stands are not flat-topped the more common claw-shape, can I place them under the boxed points without damaging the boxes? These boxes don't seem capable of sustaining that kind of force. perhaps add a wood block inside the box?

I'd say, try to place the jackstand under the plastic jack pad. Use the boxed frame section to jack on when raising. I would avoid a wood block, as it can break or slip.
