2003 Cooper S, 158k. Developed a hummmm from what appears to be the fuel tank area. Contemplating changing the fuel pump to cure the problem before further issues. Is this something that should proceed with? No other symptoms of fault.

A hum is a sign of a struggling pump. I would perform a fuel delivery system test. Check fuel pressure, volume and quality.
