Hey guys, I have a '08 JCW that will not shift into 3rd gear, it was after my 18yr old son had the car out for a drive..... and all of the sudden "it just wouldnt shift into 3rd". Weird I know... anyway it is not related to the clutch, wont go in either sitting stillengine off or on, and you can push towards the 3rd gear area it just wont get there. Could this be a shift cable "stretch" my guess is he tried a quick shift from 2-3 and slightly missed, causing something to be amiss. Has anyone else experienced this and or is this internal transmission trouble or could it be cable related? I havent dug into the issue at all but have driven it for a few months now without any other noises, or weirdness from the transmission.

If it goes in all the other gears and not third, it could be a cable, but unlikely. You can detach the cables from the transmission and see if it will manually go into third. Of course do this test with the engine off.
