What fails inside the HPFP?

what is it exactly that fails with this pump? is it a possibility to rebuild the pump?

The problem with the Mini Cooper S High Pressure fuel pump failing is an internal non return valve which fails and allows pressurized fuel to leak back into the fuel tank and as a result upon start-up has a lack of sufficient fuel to the injectors causing misfiring until the pump has built up sufficient pressure.

There are no aftermarket/performance type replacements nor any type of rebuild kits on the market. You may have some luck finding a used one on MINI forums. You can also attempt to see if your MINI qualifies for the extended warranty on the HPFP. Call your local dealer with you vin and they should tell you. Otherwise, I have posted a link to them below:
