2007 R56 cooper, persistent P0014 code. Swapped both VANOS solenoids, VANOS gears, double checked timing using locking kit, swapped around both cam sensors - same result. When engine gets warm slight ticking noise from cam gear. Misfire at tickover and live data shows firing retarded by approx. 5 degrees compared to comparable car, advances normally at higher revs. Any suggestions please

I would check for a mechanical timing issue. Likely worn timing chain guides causing timing out of spec.

How many miles are on your R56 and have you done your timing components yet? Wonder if this ticking you hear might be the start of the "death rattle." Info on all that here: MINI Cooper R56 Turbocharged Engine Timing Chain Guides Replacement (2007-2011) | Pelican Parts DIY Maintenance Article
