My car is a 2002 mini cooper base, and I can't get into 5th or Reverse. The gear shifter overall feels sloppy and loose. The transmission is only 20k miles old, all the other gears work fine with no pop outs or grinding.

Could the cables need to be replaced?

The cables are likely work out. Check the ends where they connect, are they loose?

Definitely inspect your cables. Look for damage or stretching. Cables here if needed: 2002 Mini Cooper Base Hatchback - Shift Linkage - Page 1.
