My car is a 2002 mini cooper base, and I can't get into 5th or Reverse. The gear shifter overall feels sloppy and loose. The transmission is only 20k miles old, all the other gears work fine with no pop outs or grinding.
Could the cables need to be replaced? __________________ This post was auto-generated based upon a question asked on our tech article page here: MINI Cooper Shift Cable Replacement (R50/R52/R53 2001-2006) | Pelican Parts DIY Maintenance Article |

The cables are likely work out. Check the ends where they connect, are they loose?

Definitely inspect your cables. Look for damage or stretching. Cables here if needed: 2002 Mini Cooper Base Hatchback - Shift Linkage - Page 1.
