I love what they are doing with the 919 tribute tour. Just so cool.

I think it will be a hard act to follow.
Sure at some level it can be beat , but the amount of investment and commitment it takes to do something like this.. It's a very expensive pissing contest.
And everytime the record is improved, it becomes harder and riskier to try and beat it..

Perhaps Toyota could if they had a driver like Timo Bernhard who has 5 24 hours of the ring wins under his belt.. But they don't... And Alonzo doesn't have the Ring experience, and he's busy with other things anyway

ROI and Risk involved makes it very unlikely that it will happen anytime soon

Yea, they did not have a rule book to restrict performance. They turned everything up to 11 and set a record that a current F1 car can't get to.

For sure, in the pissing contest, they are marking the fire hydrant higher up than anyone else can get close to. To build a car to beat that record will be insane expensive. It might happen someday, but not for a while.

That is pretty amazing! The sound! The fury! The glory! I'm so happy Porsche is doing this.

(I wonder if VW is looking for a new challenge now that they own the Pikes Peak record?)

Pretty awesome but I'm surprised it only topped out at 368 kph/229 mph. I'd have thought with the active aero it would trim out better than that.

Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo obliterates Nürburgring lap record
The former overall record stood for 35 years and 31 days.
https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/porsche-919-hybrid-evo-nurburgring-lap-record/
Quote:
The 919 Hybrid Evo is basically an uncorked version of the prototype Porsche took to Le Mans in 2017. Without regulations to adhere to, Porsche turned up the wick -- its net output of 1,160 horsepower is split between its four-cylinder gas engine (720 hp) and its electric motors (440 hp). The hybrid system captures energy from the front brakes and the exhaust system, storing it in a lithium-ion battery.

The aerodynamics are about as advanced as can be. Both the front diffuser and rear wing contain drag-reduction systems, and compared to the regulated 919, this car puts out 53 percent more downforce. The whole shebang weighs in at just 1,871 pounds, about 500 pounds lighter than a Mazda MX-5 Miata.
What? No more jokes about really long extension cords, and how heavy batteries make this all impossible?

But, but it's too complex, would never work on a race car?

This was going to happen, it just took some time.

In the future all electric is going to shatter even more records.

Yea, the only thing we can count on is "change".

I'm not all that excited by it either, but it's going to come.

What the heck are you talking about? Antone that has watched the LeMans races, or F1 knows full well that hybrid power systems have been around many years and are fast. This is no street car, it is a purpose built record breaker.

Porsche did it long ago with the 917-30 after it was retired from racing.

There have been past jokes about really long extension cords, and how heavy batteries make performance electric cars unrealistic, been reading such posts in this forum for at least the past dozen years consistently.

I don't know an Antone, and did not direct comments to him or anyone else in particular in this thread.

What the heck are you talking about?

Were you one of the people making extension cord and heavy battery jokes?

They were not funny, never were.

Time to admit you were wrong.

George, you can't take a multi-million dollar race car and extrapolate those results to apply to every car with an electric motor. It's apples and oranges. Electric cars still haven't overcome the obstacles to widespread acceptance that plagued them a decade ago. Hybrids are a nice stopgap but often times don't pencil out compared to an economical car with internal combustion.

Why do electric cars/trucks have to be on par in every aspect with ICE?

There is a slot that is being filled, and that slot is going to get bigger and bigger.

I'm not cheering it on, but it is going to happen, even the so-called hybrids are a stopgap measure.

For instance, Chevy is selling or will soon be selling full sized hybrid pickup trucks.

In addition they are selling the Silverado chassis to a company making a full electric version.

https://www.rivian.com/

Rivian to make all-electric pickup trucks with up to 450 mile range starting at $50,000 at old Mitsubishi plant
https://electrek.co/2018/05/24/rivian-all-electric-pickup-truck-price-450-miles-range-old-mitsubishi-plant/
Quote:
Range: 200 miles to 450 miles depending on the battery configuration (80 kWh and up)
Acceleration: 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds for top version to less than five seconds for the base version
Autonomous driving: Level 3
Price: $50,000 to $90,000
2.8 seconds 0-60, even if the final number is double that, still faster than anything we would have dreamed of +12 years ago.

Just say'n.

New 2019 Chevy Silverado pickup: planned for all powertrain types
https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1114845_new-2019-chevy-silverado-pickup-planned-for-all-powertrain-types
Quote:
Parts of the outgoing 2018 trucks, he said, date back to the "GMT-400" series introduced for 1988. The new design has eliminated those, Herrick said.

"We looked at all possible propulsion units" while designing the new pickup, he said. "There's nothing that doesn't fit" into the truck's basic architecture.

That includes not only 6- and 8-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, he acknowledged, but everything from 48-volt mild hybrid systems to hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery-electrics, and even hydrogen fuel cells.

Anyone else think it could have gone faster? *I can't believe I'm saying that to a sub 5 and half minute Ring time.

I do not see this as a pissing contest. That is too tawdry of a label in this case.

Racing is and all ways will be if you are the fastest, you are the big dog on the block. I see this more as Porsche being willing to spend the money and time (and happen to have engineers and drivers that are up to it) to go be the big dog. Destroying a 30+ year old lap record in a four cylinder hybrid certainly gives them that title and is an impressive achievement.

This will leave other teams and manufactures awed/challenged/depressed but racing is a meritocracy.

it took me weeks of practice to get a sub 5min ring time.

In GT4, in the f1 car, after thousands of surely fatal crashes. 5.19 is crazy
