Saw Knopfler race in an old Lotus at the 95 Monterey Historics. One of them 24" high ones from the 50's.
Talked to his crew but he was holed up in the trailer. This will be in OT in about 3....2....1. Thanks. I like Telegraph Road best. You think he is better than Petty? Just talking. Not a guitar guy.

Yeah, sorry, posted in the wrong place and can't figure out how to move it.
Knopfler- the Steve McQueen of the guitar world. In my opinion. Charles

![]() Maybe the mods will go easy on you. I think this is pertinent. I also think Knopfler has been in a 911 so there you go.

Either way comparison wise, not sure what you wanted to hear but I just spent 21 minutes on both and enjoyed that a lot. BRought back a ton of memories... First famous band I ever saw live, first band whose record I ever bought, and then the whole lot in CDs when CDs were invented... I remember my parents wondering if I was on drugs on something when I was playing telegraph road full blast in my room, in the dark, lying on my bed, to appreciate it more... (i wasn't ;-) Haven't followed what happened to them but they just stopped at some point ? Too bad... >"Igneous Aquam et Laudi semper" Fire water and Cindy Lauper ? ;-) (sorry I studied greek, not latin ;-) Last edited by Deschodt; 07-02-2018 at 08:15 AM.. |

answering my own Q:
In 2007, Knopfler said he did not miss the global fame that came his way at the height of the band's success, explaining that "It just got too big." In October 2008, John Illsley told the BBC that he wanted Knopfler to agree to reform Dire Straits for a comeback tour. Knopfler declined, saying that he was often reluctant to reform the group and insisted that he "isn't even a fan of Dire Straits' early hits." In the same interview, Illsley also suggested that Knopfler is enjoying his continued success as a solo artist, saying that "He's doing incredibly well as a solo artist, so hats off to him. He's having a perfectly good time doing what he's doing." Guy Fletcher stated on his website that Knopfler has no interest in reforming Dire Straits. Oh well... they left some good music behind ! |

I personally fall into the Uber Kool adulation category. I've listened to both versions many times. Initially I liked the second best. But I've changed my mind. The first version is edgy-raw-youthful. The second has, in my opinion, better guitar work by Knopfler and is sublime- but has lost the power of the more youthful person. Still, both are masterful works. Charles

Slightly off-topic, but check out the cover of Sultans of Swing by Leo Moracchioli (Frog Leap Studios). Brilliant.
I'm also a big Dire Straits fan. Making Movies is my favorite album. The guitar solo in "Tunnel of Love" is awesome.

Although I admired Tom Petty as one of the best song writers of my era, Mark Knopfler's guitar playing is at least an order-of-magnitude better than Petty's...IMHO that is.
It was actually Mike Campbell who handled most of the lead guitar work for The Heartbreakers, with Petty on vocals and second guitar.

There are a lot of very good technical players out there and there are a ton of shredders out there. There aren't a lot that can play and let the emotion through, especially slow.

It was our high school latin class motto as drafted and popularized by my classmate and friend- Carl Muckley (RIP)-
get ready-- Fire water and broads forever. (What else would you expect from a 15 year old) ![]()

I swear she let a big truck grease her hip
Their first album, 'Dire Straits" in 1978 was incredible. "Sultans of Swing" is arguably the least appealing track on the LP. 'Brothers in Arms' is better yet. Knopfler is a joy:

You can't recapture the old magic (the Straits) ..and time waits for NO ONE.
They can do a mega tour and capture the nostalgia genre like the B Boys or Stones..but it aint the same seein Jagger with his walker on stage as it was seein him back in the day prancin around like he was Jack Flash...
