Our daughter was robbed at gunpoint last night!
Our daughter has been on vacation for a week in Nevis/St Kitt with her boyfriend (Mclain), her college roommate (Lauren) and her college roommates boyfriend (?). They are staying at Lauren’s parents house. The first day, our daughter said it was beautiful and she’s never coming home...
Last night there was a knock on her bedroom door at 3:30 am. Mclain groggily gets up and opens the door. It’s three guys wearing masks with flashlights, guns and a knife. They barge in and demand money, jewelry, cell phones, cameras, etc. They didn’t get much cash, as it was the last night of their stay. They did get Mclain’s phone, cash and GoPro. Our daughter lost her cash, but they let her keep her phone. That’s weird. When leaving, one of them said they wouldn’t hurt them and tried to fist bump Mclain. He said no, you just robbed us! After a few minutes, Mclain opened the door and they went to Lauren’s room. They were robbed as well. Two other houses were robbed on the street as well last night. Police were called and statements made. Our daughter and everyone is shook up. This is much worse than when her purse was taken by a thief on a scooter while studying abroad in Europe a few years ago. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. Be careful out there. Edit: There were three guys. Last edited by A930Rocket; 06-30-2018 at 06:46 PM.. |

The world is a dangerous place! Anytime I have been out of the country, my alert status is always red! At least no one was hurt! "Stuff" can be replaced.

G'day!

My surfboard as well as an Australian friend's were both stolen from a rental car in Papeete while we were waiting for our 2:30 am departure flights.
Left a bad taste in my mouth regarding international travels....

They’ve had the time of their lives and commented how nice the locals have been.
It’s strange how they and the two other houses were robbed. It was their last night. They didn’t tell anyone where they were staying. Last edited by A930Rocket; 06-30-2018 at 05:14 PM.. |

Sorry to hear that about your kid. Its a crazy world out there. We have our share of crime in this country but I think its worst in many other 1st world countries. We just don't know how good we have it.

My Caribbean trip gave me the impression that outside of the prime tourist/resort areas, it's pretty much a 3rd world area. Go there flashing western wealth is kind of asking for it. When I went, wore a Timex, dressed K-mart style. But I was on a friend's sailboat...the grand tour was mostly backwaters.
Sorry your daughter's adventure had such a bad happening...glad nobody was hurt.

It is difficult to imagine knocking on someone's door to wake them up, brandish weapons, and take their stuff.
I can understand someone that is poor or hungry making a theft of opportunity in public places, but my ability to comprehend a home robbery just fails.

That really sucks, nice way to ruin a vacation.
My personal experience in the Bahamas and Mexico, along with many friends who have been to the region, largely matches Paul. Stay on the resort or in a tourist district and you are fine. Venture out, particularly alone, and all bets are off. Not that I wouldn’t, but I would certainly be aware of my surroundings and carry limited cash and valuables. If you are obviously a tourist, you will stand out which isn’t always good.

Thankfully they didn't get violent.
Now I must ask... "three guys". Was it 3 white guys? Just curious.

Definitely local guys though. We talked to our daughter tonight just before boarding the plane for home and she said the cops had some leads on the guys. Hopefully they get caught. |

They knocked on the door. At 3:30 am. And the young man inside opened the door.

I have to wonder if they knew the perps, hence the fist bump and the fact that they let her keep her phone. It kind of feels like there may have been some amount of personal connection there.
I'm just really glad it went the way it did which was fairly easy. It could have been much, much worse. I read and article on the BBC a while back where some vacationers or newlyweds from the UK were in some tropical location (the Caribbean I think) and were executed.

If they're local and the cops are good they should find them.

In hindsight if the door was not opened what would have happened? Happy that your daughter was not harmed. Was there a viewer on the door to see who was knocking?
