VW Phaeton - anyone know these cars?
Hey guys - does anyone know anything about the VW Phaeton?
These seem like a Bentley with a VW emblem and are cheeeep! Tell me they don't have the reliability of an Audi or W12 Passat...

Sweet ride. Not sure about reliability. A buddy had one.

Kind of a rare bird. Pretty expensive when they came out.

But far away from a Bentley. It is a large Passat. And a very boring design.

The car has more in common with the A8. The Audi had an aluminum body. The VW body was steel. Drive trains were almost identical.

The most complicated VW ever made. Need I say more? I've read that they are insanely expensive to maintain.

I have thought about buying one a couple of times. Common sense came tome at the last minute.
They are only cheap up front.

Stay away..............I uses to work with a large retail VW dealer when they were new. They sold exactly 1 V8 car - sent the other 2 V12s back. Believe me if you are looking to purchase misery & frustration - try something like a 928 or a well set- up 944 ..............
As my Dad would say - There's no such thing as a cheap horse......

Buddy had one - bought it used with an $$$$ extended warranty.
First 3 months or so - dash "went out" - got his extended warranty cost right back with that 1 item. A short while later, the "low tire pressure" audible alarm starting going off all the time - he couldn't get it to stop. Not sure what it took to get that to stop.

There is no such thing. There is a Passat B5.5 with W8 engine though. I have one. W12 is basically the same engine lengthened with extra 4 cylinders.
Both W8 and W12 have one achilles heel: cam phasing oils pressure solenoid. There is a metal mesh that will let go and lodge itself into the piston bore, locking the cam phasing. If you are handy (it's a "surgery"-type job), it is 0 dollars to remove/clean/reassemble. If you are not, it's stealership time...and they only replace phaser solenoids....which means engine out...which means 5000$ + Also, you must have VagCom and rather good grasp of CanBus and troubleshooting to be able to own one on a budget. V8 is regarded as good. V10 TDI is a beast too...but it requires somebody who is an enthusiast (or very rich). Next year, I am buying a V10! No belts, no chains! Everything is gear-driven... V10 and W12 have very unique brakes that are $$$$$

83 911 Production Cab #10
|
From Car Buzz:
Only 2,253 people purchased a Phaeton in the United States. The car was available with a 4.2-liter V8 with 335 horsepower or an optional 6.0-liter W12 engine with 420 horsepower. The Phaeton had a base price of $83,000 when new, but now both V8 and W12 models can be purchased for a fraction of that. Since Phaetons were very rare, there aren't that many used models for sale. However, you can find a good V8 model for less than $15,000. You can even find a W12 model for under $20,000. For less than the price of a nicely equipped Jetta, you can have Volkswagen's ultimate masterpiece. The Phaeton was even better than the Audi A8 and Bentley Continental, which it shared a platform and engines with. How so? Is The VW Phaeton The Best Car In The World, Or The Dumbest Waste Of Money EVER?

Electrics on regular VWs are bad enough...
