What do I do with this very old surveying transit???

This transit was given to my father by the son of the original owner about 45-50 years ago. It has been in my closet for at least 20 years. I have no use for it. It is very cool and in good condition but we're moving I don't need to keep storing it.

I've done some online searches and the best I can figure the original date is 1910 to about 1920. The original owner was one of the first licensed land surveyors in the state or so I was told. I have the box and the original tripod legs. It is heavy, 30 pounds or so. Plus the legs are wooden and also heavy.

Anyone want it or have any suggestions on who I could donate it to?

I traded a similar one to an Engineering company I worked for a few years ago. I got an almost new EDM and a couple prisms for it. I later sold the EDM for $3k

That is beautiful - I love old engineering instruments like these. I hope the next caretaker of this treats it well.

Sorry Tim.

It is a cool piece but I don't have anyplace to show it. I rather see it go to a good home than to sit in the box in my closet.

when I started in survey those were what we had
gurley minute gun
george washington would be fine with one
then we got theodolites then data recorders
the new guns auto track the rodman and do not even need a guy behind them
or even near them just push a button data is recorded like a remote control once set up
a single guy can do the work of a crew and do it faster
then there is GPS with real time correction links

btw the old units are art or history but have little real value

I told Paul to just take it to the UPS or FedEx store and have them pack it. I'll pay for everything. It will sit in front of the Bay window in my living room. And no, I won't eff it up by trying to "restore" it.

The sweet part is I actually know how to use one. I was a Surveyor/mapper in the USMC in the early 70's for the 8" Howitzers and 175 mm guns. Stuff that shot 22 miles. Old school yes, but high tech back then, now you just press a GPS button.

^ yes, nice to hear that it will be out and in view of someone that can appreciate its function and beauty.
Like old sextants it has been superseded by modern technology but remains a thing of beauty and interest .

Cheers Richard

You know, I'm not totally sure that the new stuff, Leica w gps, etc is an actual improvement over guys who know how to survey. My engineer and surveyor do a hell of a job and their stuff is super old. One of my friends is a surveyor, and I suspect they still spend more money on the new gear than my guy does with his 30 year old equipment and a 2 guy crew.

Its on its way! Paul shipped it today FedEx I should get it in 4-5 days. He'll be shipping the tripod separately in a few days. I'm jazzed. This is better than Christmas, because I'm getting something I actually want. I told him to take it to FedEx and have them box it all up. I'll gladly pay all boxing and shipping costs. Yes, yes, yes PP is a great place.

I don't want to "restore" it but I'll be asking for a few suggestions on cleaning it up. I "might" look at putting leather conditioner on the leather straps on the tripod.
