Fence creating a flood on my rural property...

I spent all morning getting drenched.... checking on things after/during torrential rains. Neighboring property owner put up a fence (been there for years), but for some reason decided to try to REALLY reinforce a portion across a small drainage ditch...usually dry, but can become a small river....and if blocked, a lake . I don't know WTF they were thinking, and don't really care .
I cut out a few lower pieces of chicken wire, and pulled out two metal posts in the middle of the ditch during heavy rain this morning and after overnight downpours...damn glad I went and checked on things...

Where is this going....danged if I know

As aggivating as a thoughtless neighbor can be, it's hard to imagine some chicken wire and a couple of poles holding back much of a water flow for long.

Don't you think it would have blown out before backing up very much?

Cheers Richard

Chicken wire will catch debris and get clogged creating a dam.

Doesn't take much.

Yep...a few twigs & leaves, tree branches, etc. and it forms a nice dam easy-peasy. I have enough ponds on the property already, but those are spring fed . This "usually dry" ditch allows for another neighbor's storm run-off to pass through my property and enters into a large stream just about ten yards on the other side of the fence....been that way for decades as all three properties belonged to my great-grandfather....more than 50 acres back then. When he passed, some of the land was sold to each neighbor...decades ago. I'm still scratching my head....why put chicken wire there, in addition to the barbed wire fence? I've seen the whole area flooded bigtime, before, when the flow was obstructed but I cleared that several years back. I don't know their rationale, but unintentionally (or with intent) blocking the flow of water just ain't gonna happen...not in my world. Oh yeah...the water is still getting to it's destined creek....they just made a big ol' freakin' mess instead of leaving as is . Yes....I'm still venting...thanks !
