If you have not looked it up yet, the SDS sheet for POR-15 Cleaner says it is composed of: water, potassium hydroxide (caustic), 2-butoxyethanol (solvent) and Ethoxylated Undecyl Alcohol (surfactant). The risk phrases include: Corrosive, Dangerous for the Environment and Harmful if Inhaled. The 2-butoxyethanol carries some significant health hazards so please don't do this again.

I’ve had similar symptoms with lacquer thinner and brake cleaner. Used it for years on the cars and parts.
Now I get awful itching and swelling for a week if I get it on my hands. Nitrile gloves every time for me now. |

In the biz, we talk about 'breakthrough' protection in gloves. In short, how long does it take something to get from the outside to the inside of the glove measure in minutes. In the case of nitrile gloves and most solvents, the breakthrough time is essentially zero. They are great and I highly recommend the use of nitrile gloves, do not get lulled into a false sense of security that you are 'protected'. You will still want to change them and wash the hands well when done.

many years ago I was wearing 1/16" thick PVC "acid" gloves similar to the ones pictured below, working around trace hydrofluoric acid (alien acid, eats through glass and 316 stainless steel like butter). Several hours later I was getting calcium gluconate shots in my knuckle with a needle they stole from Dr. Frankenstein. They air-tested the gloves and found no holes or damage, the acid just got through the acid-resistant material. The running joke from the guys who worked wit HF all the time: HCL or sulfuric? I put that stuff on my cornflakes! ![]() Last edited by sammyg2; 08-14-2018 at 10:30 AM.. |

When I was a little boy my mother had frozen a two liter ice cream container of water. I thought it looked like a giant sized ice block and licked it. I had to wait half an hour for my mom to get home so she could un-stick my tongue from it LOL

Nope. Thankfully it is empty. Got plenty of other bottles in in the hands of 20 year old undergraduate students though. Yay for me!

until 2004, I worked at a refinery that had up to 20,000 gallons of the stuff on-site.
I read the environmental impact report of a worst case scenario of uncontrolled loss of containment. I lost sleep over that. As in actually couldn't sleep that night and had trouble the next. With normal prevailing winds and total loss of containment, predicted death-toll was ...... hard to fathom. wildest nightmare, unbelievable ... more than the population of several of our smaller states. Of course there were many elaborate systems to prevent a total loss of containment such as rapid transfer pumps, deluge systems, etc. and since then they converted to a safer version of HF that raises the boiling point to 72 degrees F (from 54 degrees) but still ....... |

We used to mix HF with nitric to strip nickel off magnesium. It amazed me that nitric alone would dissolve magnesium in a heartbeat but add a bit of HF to the mix and it protects the mag completely. I HATED that stuff.

However, it's somewhat easier for the mind to wander on repetitive cuts. When that happens you have to turn the TS off and slam your head into a wall (or something along those lines) and say, "GD'ment, don't do that!" Kevin, hope that's all healed now. GD'ment, don't do that! ![]() |
