I like the styling, except for the cliche fender vent. The real factor will be if they can keep it cheaper than a comparably equipped F150. My biggest issue with the current crop of compact trucks is that I can get a 1/2 ton for the same money, and except for ease of parking they offer no other real advantages.

No standard cab offered..
Ford doesn't understand what made the Ranger a great truck.

Ease of parking is HUGE when using one as the grocery getter & town chores with light hauling. Toyota Tacoma looks too big for my taste these days. I'm still kind of wait & see...how big or small it actually is. I am also skeptical of huffer engines...just more to go wrong.

I posted about the Taco a few months ago, I had one as a rental in Seattle. For a small truck it felt big on the outside but small on the inside, and the soft bouncy suspension made it wander on the highway. Gutless thrashy V6, cheap feeling interior. I'll be shocked if Ford can't do better.

I had a 2007 Ranger. Just the right size for what I'm using it for. I really like it. Right up to the day I drive it off an overpass and the air bags didn't go off. Then, not so much. I hope Ford fixed that little problem.

I had a 93 extended cab. Loved that truck. Beat it hard for 10 years, and put next to nothing into it. Great truck.

I bought my 2004 Ranger in 06 for $6500 because it was a salvage title...but completely restored.
I sold it last week for $4000 after putting over 130k miles on it.

$2500 cost for 12 years and 130k miles....not bad.

Agree with puppy, I like the styling. I hope Ford does something with the rest of the line up including the Expedition. Chev/GMC styling much better.

I'm going to replace my Silverado 1500 with a small truck at some point. I mostly use it as a commuter, and while I use the bed weekly, it's only something every 2-3 years that a small truck couldn't handle.

You can pick up a Colorado work truck (extended cab, no standard cab offered) with a 4 banger and a manual new for under $16,000.

My dad had a Mighty Max when I was in high school. It moved my mowers and more mulch than I can remember for a few years. That thing was a tank. Looking at pics of them now I wonder how I fit in the thing. I still there is a market for a small, reasonably comfortable pickup. But why produce one when the options is an over priced cash cow?

Have you seen the new Expedition? HUGE improvement over the previous one, which looked about 10 years old.

I've seen a few in AZ, they are currently sold in Mexico. I like 'em. If it could handle a car + trailer I think I'd be a deal.

I recently traded my 2014 Sierra for a 2018 Canyon with the 2.8L Diesel, because of the "ease of parking." The main motivation was backing my trailer into my driveway in Weehawken, NJ was going to be damn near impossible with the big Sierra Crew Cab. The Canyon at 2' shorter and 9" narrower makes all the difference. 32mpg unloaded on the highway is just a bit of gravy and the grunty little turbo diesel pulling hills @ 70mph/1800rpm is nice and relaxed. And you're right...it stickered for about the same as my Sierra.

I don't know... I just don't like it. Ford's design department is just getting to be a little boring for me.

1. Price is comparable to competition is you accept a turbo 4 as an equal to a 6cyl.

2. Styling, at a distance the Chevy and Ford look similar in my opinion.

3. 2019 Ford Ranger has aluminum hood, fenders, tailgate.

Of all the complaints posted so far I give a pass.

What I'm disappointed in is they didn't go all aluminum.

I'm guessing it would have busted the budget for sure. The marketing department and number crunchers must have shown it wasn't yet viable.

EDIT:

A little bit of prophecy from 2014.........................

2014
http://www.autonews.com/article/20140922/OEM01/309229953/toyotas-big-leap-to-aluminum
Quote:
Other automakers have been relying more on aluminum for vehicle hoods and body panels. All General Motors full-size pickups and SUVs have aluminum hoods, as do 80 percent of Chrysler Group vehicles. Niche automakers also are adding more aluminum to their frames. Jaguar Land Rover's Jaguar XE and XJ sedans, XK and F-Type coupes and convertibles and Range Rover have all-aluminum bodies and structures for 2015.

"We will likely continue to see more high-volume models switch from steel to aluminum in the years to come, while lower-volume models remain steel-intensive," Lane said. "Many automakers, however, are still likely waiting to see how the F-150 rollout proceeds before further exploring the use of aluminum."

NYT's
Ford Bet on Aluminum Trucks, but Is Still Looking for Payoff
Quote:
Ford expected aluminum to give its truck a critical advantage in an era of tougher fuel-economy standards and rising gasoline prices. The company also thought the truck would pull customers away from General Motors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, and command prices high enough to increase Ford’s profit, despite aluminum’s higher cost.

But the revolutionary switch seems to be giving Ford less of an edge than it had hoped.
With moderate gasoline prices, fuel economy is no longer a persuasive factor for many truck buyers. While sales are brisk, F-Series trucks — including the F-150 and the brawnier Super Duty — have only slightly increased their share of the full-size pickup truck segment since the aluminum models arrived. Their share is actually lower than it was in 2013............................

Aluminum prices have risen more than 20 percent in the last three years — and seem likely to increase further after the Trump administration’s vowed to impose tariffs of 10 percent on aluminum and 25 percent on steel.

Quote:
Though the 2018 Ford Expedition and 2018 Lincoln Navigator followed the F-150’s aluminum lead, the 2019 Ford Ranger seems to be predominantly steel.

All of these non-full sized trucks tricked out and fully loaded hover just below $50,000.

In five years this used truck will be worth $25,000

In another five about $12,500 depending on care and miles.

Toyota is slipping with complaints about current taco motor and trans, GM has really stepped up their game with the current Colorado....it's not a bad idea to get serious about the small truck segment for Ford.

Is this one also made of pepsi cans?

Just looked it up, better but not great. Interestingly I saw today what I think was a 2018 F-150 in a dark metallic gray. The front was different. Grill surround was body color and it had a rather deep air dam. It actually looked decent. Don't know if it was stock or not. Cant say as nice as the Chevy/GMC but decent.

In my opinion the whole Ford line including Lincoln has been lacking in design and hasn't had any direction for quite a few years. The Explorer looks like it trying to be a Land Rover, the Fusion is trying to be an Aston Martin sedan. Not sure what Lincoln is doing? I think they want to be a 1930's aircraft. I hope they get it sorted out.
