The Unsettler
|
Why do I like this song?
Maybe because, to me, it "borrows" a lot of iconic licks.
It's like a scavenger hunt, it seems they were in the studio and decided to see how many iconic songs they could combine and get away with it. Starts with Manfred Mans version of Blinded By The Light, picks up the bass line from Crazy Train and layers in the guitar from Sweet Child o Mine. Hearing some Simple Man in there from around 2:05 and a bit of a Zeppelin tune I can't put my finger on. There's more. What other tidbits do you guys recognize.

I must be deaf. I don’t hear any of that. I can run “Blinded by the Light” through my head and not hear anything similar.

I don't hear any of those songs in there either. Maybe he's been hanging with Elon Musk and Joe Rogan?

I hear all those references for sure. I wish they would have continued the theme and given themselves a much cooler name than MMJ (same goes for Dashboard Confessional, Death cab, etc

You are obviously more tuned into hearing influences of the music than most. I kept waiting to be surprised, but I wasn't. The lead does sound like Neil Young a bit, but other than that, I couldn't hear any Zeppelin.

There are only so many notes. With a handful of exceptions (Hendrix comes to mind), everything is an homage to what has come before.

I have seen MMJ four times live. Okonokos, on DVD, is fantastic if you want a feel for them in concert!
